Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with coverage on ESPN+. Both teams enter at 1-1 after suffering losses Saturday. Nevada followed its impressive 49-14 opening victory over Western Kentucky with a disappointing 20-7 home loss to Montana State, while Middle Tennessee dropped a 28-26 decision at Marshall after beating Murray State 38-14 in its opener. Nevada is currently a 5.5-point favorite with the total set at 51.5. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.

Nevada Needs to Put a Bad Loss Behind It

Nevada looked like a potential Mountain West sleeper after opening the season by crushing Western Kentucky 49-14, but Saturday's performance against Montana State changed the early conversation. The Wolf Pack were beaten 20-7 at Mackay Stadium and committed four turnovers, including three interceptions. Nevada didn't score until the fourth quarter and suffered its first loss to an FCS opponent since 2023.

The offensive inconsistency is particularly concerning because the Wolf Pack moved the football into scoring territory during the first half but repeatedly failed to finish possessions. Nevada entered Montana State territory multiple times without scoring and eventually fell into a 17-0 hole. Cleaning up those mistakes becomes the obvious priority before going on the road.

Still, the opening victory over Western Kentucky provides evidence that Nevada has significantly more offensive upside than it showed Saturday. Middle Tennessee also surrendered 28 points against Marshall and has yet to face an opponent with Nevada's potential explosiveness. The Wolf Pack are capable of bouncing back, but laying more than a touchdown would be difficult after such a turnover-heavy performance.

Middle Tennessee Returns Home After a Close Road Loss

Middle Tennessee opened its season with a convincing 38-14 victory over Murray State before traveling to Marshall and suffering a narrow 28-26 defeat. The Blue Raiders therefore return to Murfreesboro at 1-1 after showing they can remain competitive on the road. Losing by two points is considerably easier to recover from than Nevada's disappointing home loss to an FCS opponent.

The Blue Raiders have also shown better offensive consistency through their first two games. Middle Tennessee has scored 64 combined points and reached at least 26 in both contests. That becomes particularly relevant against a Nevada defense that just allowed Montana State to control large portions of the game despite holding the Bobcats to only 20 points.

Home field and Nevada's travel also make this a dangerous spot for the favorite. Nevada has to travel from Reno to Tennessee immediately after an emotional home defeat, while Middle Tennessee gets its second home game. The Wolf Pack may have the higher ceiling, but the Blue Raiders have enough offensive capability to remain within striking distance throughout the fourth quarter.

Nevada vs Middle Tennessee Picks and Prediction

Pick: Middle Tennessee +5.5

Take Middle Tennessee +5.5. Nevada's 49-14 opening victory was impressive, but the Wolf Pack followed it by scoring only seven points and committing four turnovers against Montana State. Middle Tennessee has scored at least 26 in both of its games and just lost by two at Marshall. Getting more than a field goal with the home team provides better value than asking Nevada to immediately rebound by winning comfortably on a long road trip.

Pick: Under 51.5

Take the Under 51.5. Nevada's defense held Montana State to 20 points despite the offense committing four turnovers, which is encouraging even in defeat. The Wolf Pack should also emphasize ball security and a more controlled offensive approach after Saturday's mistakes. A projected Middle Tennessee 24, Nevada 23 gives the Blue Raiders the outright upset and keeps the game below the posted total.

Final Picks: Middle Tennessee +5.5 and Under 51.5
