The New York Giants will visit the Washington Commanders this Sunday to kick off their NFL seasons, and we'll preview the lines and odds in our Giants vs. Commanders prediction. These teams meet twice annually as division rivals–both matchups went to the Commanders in 2024, but neither was decided by more than five points. Their next meeting kicks off on Sunday, September 7, at 1:00 PM ET.

How Fast Can Giants Start in Pivotal Year?

The New York Giants struggled mightily in 2024, ending the season with a 3-14 overall record and a 0-6 record against their division opponents. Daniel Jones, who opened the season as the Giants' starting quarterback, was benched, released, and signed to the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad by the end of November. It was a low point in the three-year tenures of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, who entered the 2025 offseason with pressure to find a new quarterback centerpiece for the team and climb back up the standings.

Enter Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jaxson Dart. Wilson enters the year as the starter and should bring a higher floor to the offense than they had in 2024, with Jones or any of the quarterbacks who started in his wake. Dart, a rookie the team traded up to select 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, put on a dominant showing in the preseason and will inevitably take over under center at some point. The offense beyond the quarterback is largely carried over from last season – Malik Nabers enters his second year after a phenomenal rookie showing despite the circumstances. On defense, the team added big-ticket free agent defensive backs Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland, before drafting Abdul Carter with the third overall pick to overcharge a defensive front already featuring Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

If the Giants' new-look defense meshes well and Dart plays like advertised, this team could bounce up the standings drastically in 2025. We'll see how they look against a Commanders team they played close in both games a year ago.

What Can Commanders Bring in Year 2?

The Washington Commanders entered the 2024 season with low expectations after cycling critical personnel at every level of the organization. Adam Peters signed on as the team's new general manager in January, before hiring Dan Quinn as the team's new head coach. Several older veteran players were brought in during free agency that March – linebacker Bobby Wagner, tight end Zach Ertz, and running back Austin Ekeler among them. With the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft – that the Commanders had earned by going 4-13 the previous year – they selected quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Success came quickly for the new-look team; much quicker than anyone outside the building anticipated. Daniels finished the season with 4,459 yards and 31 touchdowns between his passing and rushing contributions, easily securing the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The Commanders finished the season 12-5, winning each of their last five games in the regular season and two road playoff games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (23-20) and Detroit Lions (45-31).

Entering 2025, the Commanders are now faced with high expectations. The team traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil to fill one of their 2024 roster's most glaring deficiencies, traded for receiver/playmaker Deebo Samuel to fill a secondary wide receiver role behind franchise icon Terry McLaurin, and signed McLaurin to an extension in August to end a grisly offseason holdout sequence. They made only three picks in the first five rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft: offensive tackle Josh Conerly, cornerback Trey Amos, and receiver Jaylin Lane. We'll see if Daniels, Quinn, and company can lead the Commanders to similar heights after blowing past expectations in Year 1.

New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders Pick

Spread Pick for New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders

  • New York Giants +6.0 (-110) (4 Units)

The Giants, in much worse shape a year ago, played two games against the Commanders and held them to within six points in both. They figure to pose a greater threat in 2025, especially on defense – a unit that Jayden Daniels and the Commanders' offense will have to prepare for without any regular-season film to reference. Thursday night saw a closely-contested game between the other two teams in the NFC East; I'd expect this one to come down to a similar margin, even if Washington still ultimately defends their home.

Over/Under Pick for New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders

  • Under 45.5 (4 Units)

The Giants' defense should give opponents trouble this season – certainly in Week 1, when the Commanders have limited means to prepare for them. On the Giants' side, Russell Wilson brings stability to the unit; it's hard to say he brings explosive firepower after watching his performances in Denver and Pittsburgh over the past few years. The Week 2 meeting between these teams in 2024 ended in a 21-18 Commanders win; I'd anticipate something in the same ballpark.
