The California Golden Bears will host the North Carolina Tar Heels this Friday night in a late ACC matchup, and we'll preview the lines and odds in our North Carolina vs. California prediction. The Bears are coming off a disappointing home loss to Duke, while the Tar Heels spent last week dropping a home game to Clemson. Kickoff is set for 10:30 PM ET on Friday, October 17.

Tar Heels 2-3 after latest ugly Power 4 loss

The UNC Tar Heels are off to an inglorious start in their first year with head coach Bill Belichick. They're 2-3 overall and 0-1 in ACC play after falling 38-10 against Clemson last week. It was the third time in as many games against Power 4 opponents that Belichick's Tar Heels have lost by four scores or more, joining the team's 34-9 loss to UCF two weeks ago and their 48-14 loss to TCU in the season opener.

It took all of eleven seconds for Clemson to score their first touchdown against UNC–Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik threw a backward pass to receiver Antonio Williams, who connected with fellow receiver T.J. Moore on a pass that went over the heads of the entire Tar Heels' defense. That was the first of four first-quarter touchdowns for the Tigers, who won the first quarter 28-3 before slowing down and outscoring the Tar Heels only 10-7 over the last 45 minutes. Klubnik got everything he wanted against the Tar Heels' defense, completing 22 of 24 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns before taking the fourth quarter off. Tar Heels quarterback Max Johnson didn't have it nearly as easy, completing only 26 of 42 passes for 208 yards–good for a 61.9% completion percentage but less than half of Klubnik's 10.6 yards per attempt.

Johnson was thrust into action during the Tar Heels' loss to UCF after starting quarterback Gio Lopez was ruled out with a leg injury. Lopez struggled early in the season and wasn't announced as the team's starter until late in an offseason camp battle. His availability merits watching on the ACC injury report, but whether he'd give the Tar Heels a better chance of holding up against California than Johnson is a fair question.

Cal 4-2 after four giveaways in Duke loss

The California Golden Bears are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play after a 45-21 loss to Duke in Week 6. It's a respectable record overall, but the Bears now have two ugly losses in the books between their showing against Duke and their woeful 34-0 road loss to San Diego State in Week 4. Neither game was projected to be nearly as ugly on the spread–the Bears were favored by 14 against the Aztecs, and they were only three-point underdogs against the Blue Devils two weeks ago.

It doesn't take too deep a dive into the box score to see where the Bears' loss to the Blue Devils went wrong. Cal had control of the game in the first quarter–their first drive went 75 yards for a touchdown, their second drive went 55 yards for a touchdown, and the Blue Devils' drive in between went nine yards backward before ending in a punt. The Bears scored a third touchdown on an 11-play, 80-yard drive to open the second quarter, but that would be the Bears' last effectively executed drive of the day. Freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw an interception two plays into their next drive–he'd throw two more before the game ended, not counting the pick thrown by reserve quarterback Devin Brown on the Bears' last possession. Four of the Bears' last nine drives ended in picks; three more went backward before ending in punts. In the meantime, the Blue Devils scored 24 points in the second quarter and 14 in the fourth while never giving the ball away themselves, ending the game with 445 total yards to the Bears' 286.

Cal ranks 50th among FBS teams with 255.0 passing yards per game, T-91st with 25.2 points per game, and 57th with only 22.5 points allowed per game. They should have an easier time this week with a home game against the Tar Heels, who've thus far yielded huge wins to every Power 4 opponent they've faced.

North Carolina vs. California Pick

Spread Pick for North Carolina vs. Cal

  • California -10.0 (-110) (4 Units)

North Carolina hasn't played a close game all season–they won 20-3 against Charlotte and 41-6 against FCS Richmond between hideous losses to TCU, UCF, and Clemson. California has a couple of inexplicable losses on their record, but they're 3-0 against the spread in the three games they've won against FBS opponents. Both teams are coming off a Week 7 bye, giving the Bears some time to recalibrate after giving away their game against Duke. I'd expect them to handle their business much better against North Carolina and become the latest Power 4 team to beat them, even if not by the overwhelming margin of their predecessors.

Over/Under Pick for North Carolina vs. Cal

  • Under 47.5 (-110) (4 Units)

A total line of 47.5 feels ambitious for a game between North Carolina and California–one team that hasn't scored more than 14 points against a Power 4 opponent, and another that's only projected to beat them by 10 points. The Tar Heels' biggest offensive showing against an FBS opponent was their 20-3 win over Charlotte. The Bears' only trip above the 30-point threshold this year, against an FBS opponent, was their 34-15 win over Oregon State in the season opener. I don't think this game hits the over unless one team comes out and shows off an offensive gear we haven't seen in several weeks, and I wouldn't rush to make that prediction about either of them after watching the product they most recently put on the field.
