Tar Heels Ready to Shake Off Opener

The North Carolina Tar Heels are getting ready to recover from a forgettable start to the Bill Belichick era as they are coming off a 48-14 home loss against the TCU Horned Frogs. UNC’s offense is led by quarterback Max Johnson, who replaced Gio Lopez later in the game. He was able to complete 9-of-11 passes for 103 yards with one passing touchdown in the game. Their total offense stands at 222.0 yards per game, with rushing accounting for only 50.0 yards. The passing game needs to be more effective as well, averaging 172.0 yards thus far.

Defensively, UNC was brutal, allowing 542.0 total yards per game, with their rush defense allowing a whopping 7.4 yards per carry. The Tar Heels need to be able to slow down the passing game to not allow the defense to be manhandled like it was in Week 1.

Injury Report for North Carolina

  • Quarterback Gio Lopez: Back (Questionable)
  • Offensive guard Austin Blaske: Foot (OUT)
  • Defensive lineman Peter Pesansky: Undisclosed (OUT)

49ers Looking for Improvement

The Charlotte 49ers are looking to take a step in the right direction this year, but are coming off a 34-11 home loss against the App State Mountaineers. Quarterback Conner Harrell struggled in this game as he completed 13-of-24 passes for 142 yards with one touchdown pass to one interception. As a team, they led with their passing, averaging 142.0 yards through the air per game. Charlotte’s total offense, which averages 218.0 yards per game, will need to find new ways to maintain its efficiency. The rushing game, contributing 76.0 yards per game, needs to find ways to create more offense.

The 49ers defense, allowing an average of 586.0 total yards per game, has been their weakest part of the team this season. Their rush defense, in particular, needs to improve, conceding 182.0 yards on the ground per game. Their pass defense, allowing 404.0 yards per game, has to showcase an ability to limit deep passes in order to get in the win column.

Injury Report for Charlotte

  • Running back Henry Rutledge: Undisclosed (Questionable)
  • Wide receiver Adam Hopkins IV: Leg (Questionable)

North Carolina vs. Charlotte pick

Spread Pick for UNC vs. Charlotte

  • North Carolina Tar Heels -13.5 (4 units)

This is a risky play, but buying into Bill Belichick being able to coach up the defense should not be a massive undertaking. Whether it is Gio Lopez or Max Johnson under center, they should be able to torch this Charlotte defense. The 49ers are not moving the football well, going 4-for-14 on third downs last week as well as turning the ball over twice. North Carolina can easily take advantage of that so go with the UNC Tar Heels to cover the spread.

  • Over/Under: Over 49.5 (5 units)

Even if I believe the defenses improve from last week, that is 82 points surrendered in Week 1. Both teams were down early, meaning they could not run the football as much as they were going to want to and making the offenses a bit more one-dimensional as a result. UNC could not apply pressure as they failed to record a single sack, so Charlotte’s offensive line should keep the pocket relatively clean. All in all, go with over 49.5 total points as the better bet.
