North Dakota State Has Dominated Its First Two Games
North Dakota State's first season as an FBS program couldn't have started much better. The Bison opened by hammering Jacksonville State 33-7 before returning home and shutting out Fordham 38-0.
Nathan Hayes was extremely efficient against Fordham, completing 18 of 22 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. The Bison controlled the game from the start and again received an excellent performance from a defense that has surrendered only seven points through two games.
The Jacksonville State result carries considerably more weight when evaluating this matchup. North Dakota State didn't simply beat an FBS opponent in its debut; the Bison won by 26 points. That performance reinforced that this roster is capable of immediately competing at the FBS level rather than needing an extended transition period.
North Dakota State now encounters a very different offensive system. Air Force's option attack forces opponents to remain disciplined on every snap, and playing at altitude in Colorado Springs adds another challenge. The Bison's physicality and defensive discipline, however, make them unusually well suited for the assignment.
Air Force Gets Its First Major Test
Air Force enters at 1-0 after beginning its season at Falcon Stadium. The Falcons now remain home for what should be a much more revealing matchup against a North Dakota State team that has looked dominant through eight quarters.
Liam Szarka leads the Air Force offense from the quarterback position, while Rocco Conti provides another important component of the Falcons' rushing attack. As usual, Air Force wants to establish the run, control possession and force opponents to defend the entire width of the field.
That style can become particularly effective at Falcon Stadium. Long drives not only produce points but also force opposing defenses to remain on the field at altitude, potentially creating opportunities later in the game.
North Dakota State is unlikely to be intimidated by the physical nature of the matchup. The Bison have built their program around winning at the line of scrimmage and have already demonstrated that philosophy translates against FBS competition.
North Dakota St. vs Air Force Picks and Prediction
Pick: North Dakota State -5.5
North Dakota State -5.5 is my preferred side. The Bison have been substantially more impressive through the early portion of the season, beating Jacksonville State 33-7 and Fordham 38-0. North Dakota State's defensive discipline is particularly important against the Air Force option, and the Bison possess enough offensive balance to avoid becoming one-dimensional. Playing at Falcon Stadium prevents me from laying a much larger number, but below a touchdown I'll back the Bison. Take North Dakota State -5.5.
Pick: Under 47.5
The Under 47.5 is my preferred total. North Dakota State has allowed seven points through two games, while Air Force's offensive approach naturally consumes clock and reduces the number of possessions. The Falcons should have more difficulty creating explosive rushing plays against the Bison than they do against many opponents, while NDSU has no reason to play at an unnecessarily fast tempo on the road. Something around 27-14 or 28-17 fits the matchup. Take Under 47.5.
Final Picks: North Dakota State -5.5 and Under 47.5
