North Dakota State vs Sacramento State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 11:59 PM ET

The North Dakota State Bison travel to Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California, to face the Sacramento State Hornets on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET. This matchup looks much different in 2026 because North Dakota State is now competing at the FBS level as a member of the Mountain West. Sacramento State, meanwhile, returns home after suffering a disastrous 49-3 loss at Fresno State. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. North Dakota State Has Made an Immediate FBS Impact

North Dakota State's move into the FBS ranks was one of the most interesting changes entering the 2026 season, and the Bison haven't approached the transition timidly. The program already possessed a championship culture and infrastructure uncommon for a newcomer, which has helped reduce the normal adjustment period associated with moving up.

The Bison's physical identity translates particularly well to a matchup like this. Sacramento State just struggled badly against Fresno State, and North Dakota State should have opportunities to control the line of scrimmage rather than relying on a high-variance passing game. That makes the Bison attractive even though they're traveling to California.

North Dakota State also shouldn't be treated like a normal visitor stepping into an FCS stadium. The Bison have extensive experience playing significant road games and should have no problem handling the environment. The primary question is how much the market adjusts after Sacramento State's ugly Week 2 performance.

Sacramento State Needs to Forget the Fresno State Game Quickly

Sacramento State entered Fresno with some optimism but was overwhelmed 49-3. The Hornets allowed 32 points during the second quarter alone and went into halftime trailing 39-3. The game was essentially over before the teams returned from the locker room.

That result is especially concerning because North Dakota State's physical style can create similar problems. Sacramento State must find a way to prevent the Bison from controlling possession and gradually wearing down the defense. Another poor second quarter could put the Hornets in an impossible position.

Returning to Hornet Stadium provides some relief, and Sacramento State should perform better than it did in Fresno. Still, the Hornets now face another opponent capable of controlling the line of scrimmage. Until Sacramento State demonstrates it can recover from Saturday's performance, backing the home team requires too much faith.

North Dakota State vs Sacramento State Picks and Prediction

Pick: North Dakota State -10.5 or Better

Take North Dakota State if the Bison are laying -10.5 or better. Sacramento State just lost 49-3 to Fresno State and demonstrated major problems once the Bulldogs established physical control. North Dakota State is now an FBS program and possesses exactly the kind of physical identity capable of exploiting those weaknesses. Anything below two touchdowns keeps the Bison attractive.

Pick: Under 51.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 51.5 or higher. North Dakota State should be able to control the game through possession and defense rather than needing a shootout. Sacramento State scored only three points at Fresno State, and the Hornets now face another physical opponent. A projected North Dakota State 31, Sacramento State 13 gives the Bison a comfortable cover while keeping the game below the target.

Final Picks: North Dakota State -10.5 or Better and Under 51.5
