North Texas vs Texas State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 02:35 PM ET

The North Texas Mean Green travel to UFCU Stadium in San Marcos, Texas, to face the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET. North Texas entered 2026 in a transition season under a new coaching staff and opened against defending national champion Indiana before hosting UNLV. Texas State has also already experienced a major step up in competition after traveling to face Texas earlier this month. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. North Texas Is Still Establishing Its Identity

North Texas entered 2026 facing substantial change after the program's success in 2025 resulted in major personnel movement. The Mean Green opened the season with about as difficult a test as possible and were beaten 52-16 by defending national champion Indiana. That result demonstrated how much work remained for the rebuilt roster.

The schedule didn't provide much relief, with UNLV coming to Denton in Week 2. Those early games should at least help accelerate the evaluation process for the new coaching staff. North Texas has already been forced to discover which parts of its offense and defense can hold up when facing quality opposition.

This matchup should be considerably more competitive. Texas State doesn't possess Indiana's overwhelming talent advantage, and North Texas should have opportunities to generate offense. The concern is whether the Mean Green can consistently stop a Texas State team playing at home. If this turns into an exchange of explosive possessions, North Texas needs to avoid falling behind and becoming one-dimensional.

Texas State Gets the Home Edge in a Regional Matchup

Texas State has already faced its own difficult measuring stick after traveling to Austin to face Texas. Games against national-title contenders can distort early-season statistics, so the Bobcats shouldn't be evaluated solely by what happened against one of the country's strongest rosters.

Returning to San Marcos changes the equation. Texas State gets a much more comparable opponent and should have opportunities to attack a North Texas defense that surrendered 52 points to Indiana. Home field also matters more in a matchup where the overall talent gap is considerably smaller.

The Bobcats' biggest opportunity is creating early offensive pressure. North Texas is still adjusting to a new staff and significant roster turnover, and forcing the Mean Green to chase points could expose those growing pains. Texas State doesn't deserve to be a huge favorite, but at a modest number the home team has the stronger betting case.

North Texas vs Texas State Picks and Prediction

Pick: Texas State -3 or Better

Take Texas State if the Bobcats are favored by -3 or less. North Texas is rebuilding under a new staff and already surrendered 52 points in its first major test. Texas State gets this matchup in San Marcos and should be able to create enough offensive opportunities to exploit those defensive concerns. At anything beyond a touchdown I'd reconsider, but around a field goal the home side is my preference.

Pick: Over 58.5

Take the Over if the total is set at 58.5 or lower. North Texas' defensive questions create the foundation for this play, but the Mean Green should find considerably more offensive room here than they did against Indiana. Texas State should be willing to attack at home, and North Texas may have to respond aggressively if it falls behind. A projected Texas State 34, North Texas 28 clears the target while keeping the game competitive.

Final Picks: Texas State -3 or Better and Over 58.5
