Mean Green Looking to Stay Strong
The North Texas Mean Green season has gotten off to a great start as they are coming off a 51-0 home victory over the FCS Lamar Cardinals in their most recent game. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker, going 24-for-32 with 329 passing yards and three touchdown passes as well as five rushes for 30 yards (6.0 yards per attempt) and a rushing touchdown on the ground, has been a bright spot in the offense. North Texas was able to move the football as they were 7-for-12 on third downs.
The Mean Green were able to do extremely well in moving the football as they averaged 9.7 yards per pass and 3.2 yards per rush. Defensively, North Texas dominated as they allowed zero points on 119 total yards. They were able to slow down Arizona in the running game as the Cardinals ran 1.1 rushing yards per attempt as well while also having them go 3-for-13 on third down opportunities. Broncos Ready to Ride
The Western Michigan Broncos was not able to step up in their most recent game as they fell to the Big 10's Michigan State Spartans 23-6. Quarterback Brady Jones struggled under center as he completed 11-of-23 passes for 97 yards with an interception.
While the running game wasn’t able to get going, the passing game was slightly better. Wide receiver Baylin Brooks led the way for Western Michigan as he recorded three receptions for 85 yards (28.3 yards per catch) but was not able to find the end zone. He was a main reason as to why the Broncos were able to get much of anything going offensively.
Western Michigan’s defense did a good job as they were able to hold Michigan State to 20 first downs throughout the 60 minutes. Their best ability was the fact that they were able to force an interception of their own during the game.

North Texas vs. Western Michigan Pick
Spread Pick for North Texas vs. Western Michigan
- North Texas Mean Green -9.5 (4 units)
The Mean Green has been the better overall team this season and should be able to control how things look here. Western Michigan’s offense should look better than in Week 1 due to the quality of the opponent, but North Texas is still the better team. Mestemaker showcased how effective he can be in the passing game with a 75.0 completion percentage and three touchdowns through the air. The Broncos have not shown they can slow him down, so take the North Texas Mean Green to cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for North Texas vs. Western Michigan
- Over 56.5
Both teams are going to be able to move the ball at a good level as the stats for Western Michigan are a bit misleading as they played against a superior program in Week 1. However, these teams are going to play okay defense and this is a chance for Jones to really get back on track after a down game. These offenses should be able to put points on the board quickly so take the over as the better bet here.
