Northern Illinois vs Arizona Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

The Northern Illinois Huskies travel to Casino Del Sol Stadium in Tucson, Arizona, to face the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET. Northern Illinois is another new member of the Mountain West in 2026, while Arizona returns home at 1-1 after suffering a 28-17 road loss against No. 15 BYU. The Wildcats led 17-14 at halftime in Provo before being shut out during the second half. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Northern Illinois Gets Its Biggest Test of the Young Season

Northern Illinois' move into the Mountain West creates an unusual schedule, and Saturday's trip to Tucson gives the Huskies an opportunity to test themselves against Big 12 competition. NIU has historically built its best teams around physical football and defense, an approach that could help keep this matchup competitive.

The key is surviving the opening portion of the game. Arizona is returning home after a frustrating loss and should play with urgency. Northern Illinois cannot allow the Wildcats to create two or three early scoring drives and force the Huskies away from a controlled offensive approach.

NIU's best path is turning this into a lower-possession game. Arizona struggled offensively after halftime against BYU, and the Wildcats showed that they can become inefficient when forced into obvious passing situations. If Northern Illinois keeps the score manageable through three quarters, a double-digit spread becomes valuable.

Arizona Needs to Finish After Its Second-Half Collapse

Arizona played well enough to threaten an upset at BYU. The Wildcats led 17-14 at halftime and generated 240 yards before the break, repeatedly moving the football against the No. 15 team in the country.

Everything changed after halftime. Arizona was held scoreless and managed only 87 yards during the second half. The Wildcats also produced minus-two rushing yards after the break as BYU increasingly controlled the line of scrimmage. Arizona eventually lost 28-17 and fell to 1-1.

Returning home should help, and Northern Illinois doesn't possess BYU's overall talent. Still, the second-half collapse makes it difficult to lay an enormous spread. Arizona needs to prove it can maintain offensive efficiency for four quarters rather than dominating only when its scripted offense is working.

Northern Illinois vs Arizona Picks and Prediction

Pick: Northern Illinois +13.5 or Better

Take Northern Illinois if the Huskies are getting +13.5 or better. Arizona is the more talented team and my straight-up winner, but the Wildcats just went scoreless after halftime against BYU and produced only 87 second-half yards. NIU's physical style gives the Huskies a chance to shorten the game and stay within two touchdowns.

Pick: Under 49.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 49.5 or higher. Arizona's offense stalled completely during the second half at BYU, while Northern Illinois' best strategy is limiting possessions. I expect Arizona to control the game without producing a huge offensive total. A projected Arizona 27, Northern Illinois 17 gives the Huskies the cover and keeps the matchup below the target.

Final Picks: Northern Illinois +13.5 or Better and Under 49.5
