Mark Gronowski looks to lead Iowa over the Hoosiers

Northern Illinois opens its 2026 season with a difficult road trip to Iowa City to face No. 22 Iowa on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:15 PM ET at Kinnick Stadium, with Big Ten Network carrying the game. Iowa is currently favored by 31.5 points, while the total is set at only 45.5. That combination immediately makes the underdog interesting because oddsmakers are asking Iowa to cover more than four touchdowns in a game expected to feature relatively limited scoring. Northern Illinois Gets a Big Number

Northern Illinois begins its first season in the Mountain West with one of the toughest environments it will encounter all year.

The Huskies need to avoid allowing Iowa's defense and field-position game to create easy points. Turnovers could turn a potentially competitive first half into a blowout quickly.

From a betting perspective, however, +31.5 provides plenty of room. Northern Illinois can lose by four touchdowns and still cash the ticket.

That's especially significant with a total of only 45.5. Oddsmakers are essentially asking Iowa to produce a huge percentage of the game's expected points while simultaneously covering more than four touchdowns.

Iowa Should Control the Game

Iowa enters the season ranked No. 22 and should have major advantages at home. The Hawkeyes were also one of college football's better spread teams last season, finishing 10-3 ATS.

There isn't much reason to doubt Iowa's ability to win this game.

Covering 31.5 is another matter.

If Northern Illinois manages only 7-10 points, Iowa could need to reach around 40 to cover. That's a significant requirement when the entire game total is just 45.5.

Northern Illinois vs Iowa Picks and Prediction

Pick: Northern Illinois +31.5

I'll take Northern Illinois +31.5. Iowa should control the game, but the relationship between the spread and total makes laying more than four touchdowns difficult. A 31-7 or 34-7 Iowa victory would represent a thoroughly convincing performance and still cash the Huskies. Northern Illinois doesn't need much offensive production to make Iowa's covering requirement substantially more difficult. Take Northern Illinois +31.5.

Pick: Under 45.5

The Under 45.5 is my preferred total. Iowa's path to a comfortable victory doesn't require an offensive shootout, and Northern Illinois could struggle to consistently finish drives. Something around Iowa 31, Northern Illinois 7 produces a decisive Hawkeyes victory while staying comfortably beneath the total. Take Under 45.5.

Final Picks: Northern Illinois +31.5 and Under 45.5
