Northern Iowa Brings Some Momentum Into Iowa City

Northern Iowa needed a response after dropping its opener 34-24 at Eastern Washington, and the Panthers delivered one in their home opener against Drake. UNI won 35-14 after building a 28-7 halftime advantage, giving the Panthers some confidence before making the short trip to Iowa City. The competition increases dramatically Saturday, but Northern Iowa at least enters after playing much cleaner football than it did in Week 1.

The Panthers produced a balanced offensive effort against Drake, finishing with 410 total yards while controlling the game for more than 34 minutes. Northern Iowa also avoided turnovers and converted four of its five red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. Those details become considerably more important against Iowa because the Panthers cannot afford to provide the Hawkeyes with short fields. Long possessions and clean football are essential if UNI wants to keep the margin manageable.

The biggest obstacle is Iowa's defense. Northern Iowa scored 24 and 35 points in its first two games, but neither opponent presented anything close to the physical challenge the Hawkeyes will provide. The Panthers need to establish enough of a running threat to avoid obvious passing situations because consistently asking the offense to convert third-and-long against Iowa is unlikely to produce sustained success.

Iowa's Defense Has Already Established Its Identity

Iowa enters 2-0 after winning two games in completely different fashions. The Hawkeyes overwhelmed Northern Illinois 40-0 in the opener before grinding out a 16-13 victory over Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk rivalry. Iowa State was able to generate some early offense, but the Hawkeyes prevented the Cyclones from turning the game into a high-scoring contest and gave their offense enough opportunities to eventually produce the winning points.

Saturday is a potential emotional letdown after the rivalry win, which makes laying an enormous spread somewhat uncomfortable. Iowa doesn't need to score 40 or 50 points to dominate Northern Iowa. The Hawkeyes can control field position, play defense and steadily wear down the Panthers. That makes Iowa extremely likely to win but also makes the total potentially more attractive than an inflated favorite spread.

Northern Iowa also enters after a convincing 35-14 win and should approach this in-state opportunity with considerable motivation. Iowa can win by three touchdowns without ever seriously threatening the ATS position, making UNI attractive once the spread reaches four touchdowns.

Pick: Under 47.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 47.5 or higher. Iowa has allowed only 13 points through two games, and Northern Iowa now faces by far the strongest defense on its early schedule.
