Northwestern Has Been Better Than Expected

Northwestern has quietly opened the season 2-0. The Wildcats defeated South Dakota State 34-18 in their opener and then produced an even more impressive 41-7 victory over Colorado. They have therefore outscored their first two opponents 75-25 and arrive in Bloomington with considerably more confidence than their preseason profile might have suggested.

The most impressive element has been Northwestern’s balance between scoring and preventing points. An offense averaging 37.5 points through two games immediately changes the equation if the Wildcats can carry that production into conference play, while allowing only 12.5 per contest provides an encouraging defensive foundation.

There is an obvious jump in competition here. Indiana is ranked No. 4 and has not lost through three games, while Northwestern has yet to play away from home this season. Still, a team that just beat Colorado by 34 points deserves considerably more respect than a typical large underdog. Northwestern’s early performance makes taking a massive Indiana spread potentially dangerous.

Indiana Defense Has Been Dominant

Indiana improved to 3-0 with a 38-0 shutout of Western Kentucky. The Hoosiers were not perfect offensively, particularly during a slower first half, but they eventually took complete control and turned a 14-0 halftime advantage into a comfortable 38-point victory. More importantly, the defense never allowed Western Kentucky onto the scoreboard.

The Hoosiers have demonstrated an ability to create separation even when the offense does not immediately find its rhythm. Against Western Kentucky, Indiana used defensive stops and turnovers to remain in control until the offense began generating bigger plays after halftime. That formula is particularly effective at home because opponents can quickly find themselves chasing the game.

The question is how Indiana handles its first opponent that enters with legitimate early-season momentum. Northwestern has scored 75 points in two games and just held Colorado to seven. Indiana deserves to be favored substantially based on its ranking, home field and 3-0 start, but the Wildcats have done enough to make an enormous point spread difficult to justify.

Indiana is the stronger team on paper and could certainly win comfortably, but the betting question is different from the outright winner. Northwestern has won its first two games by 16 and 34 points and has allowed only 25 total points. Getting more than two touchdowns with an undefeated team that has performed that well is appealing. Indiana’s slower offensive start against Western Kentucky also suggests Northwestern may have an opportunity to keep this competitive into the second half. At +17.5 or better, the Wildcats are the side.

Pick: Under 53.5 or Higher

Both defenses have provided reasons to lean under. Northwestern has surrendered only 12.5 points per game, while Indiana enters directly off a shutout. The Hoosiers may ultimately create separation, but their best path does not require turning the game into a shootout. Something around 31-17 or 34-14 would fit the matchup while staying beneath this target. At 53.5 or higher, the under provides enough cushion to account for both offenses’ early scoring success.
