Ohio State can’t look ahead

They have three games left with bottom-half Big Ten teams before the regular season finale versus No. 21 Michigan.

Purdue with chances to spoil
Tasked with finishing the season versus four straight Top 25 teams, including the two current top teams in the land, the Boilermakers are just looking to be respectable at this point. They come into this game having lost seven straight and they are 0-6 SU in the Big Ten.
Purdue comes to the table with the third-lightest offense in the Big Ten, averaging 22.1 points per game. They are 10th in the conference with 376.4 total yards and 234.1 passing yards per game. Though he hasn’t thrown an interception over his last three games, Ryan Browne averaged just 93.7 passing yards. This season, the sophomore QB has 1,822 passing yards with 9 TDs, 7 INTs and has been sacked 14 times. Michael Jackson III is tied for third in the Big Ten with 50 catches, 456 yards, and a touchdown. The team ranks 11th in the conference with 142.3 rushing yards per game. Malachi Thomas had a season-high 15 carries last week for 68 yards. He is the team’s top active rusher with 206 yards.
Defensively, Purdue is 15th in the conference, giving up 27 points per game. They rank second-to-last in the Big Ten in yards, allowing 395 total yards each week. The Boilermakers have the third-worst pass defense in the conference, giving up 234.4 yards, and fourth fourth-worst rush defense, allowing 160.6 yards per game. They’ve been able to get to the opposing QB for 21 sacks, but their 3 interceptions are tied for second-fewest in the Big Ten. Tahj Ra-El and Mani Powell are tied for the conference lead with 81 tackles apiece, and Charles Correa is fourth with 78. CJ Nunnally IV leads the team with 5 sacks.
Team notes
- In conference games, Jackson has a Big Ten-best 39 catches for 315 yards.
- Devin Mockobee, fourth all-time on Purdue’s rushing yards leaderboard, had season-ending ankle surgery following a run of playing 37 straight games for the Boilers.
- Ra-El has three straight double-digit tackle performances.
- Spencer Porath is 10th in the country in field goal percentage (91.7%).
- Purdue allows 2.7 yards per punt return, the 12th-best punt return defense in the country.
Ohio State vs. Purdue Picks
Spread Pick for Ohio State vs. Purdue
- Ohio State -29 (5 units)
The Boilermakers couldn’t get off the mat when these two met last season as the Buckeyes took a 45-0 victory at home. Ohio State has a commanding 45-15-2 SU lead in the head-to-head with the Boilermakers. In conference play, the Boilermakers are 0-3 SU at home. Ohio State’s most recent road win was a 34-0 shutout at Wisconsin, so they can absolutely go on the road and win by this margin. They’ve won two of their last four games by at least that margin, so they are in full stride in all aspects of the game. Sayin has thrown for over 300 yards in three of the last four games and the defense allowed an average of 8.3 points per game. Purdue struggles enough to score; now they have to try and do so against the best scoring defense in the land. Ohio State is 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS in their last six games against the Boilermakers.
Take the Buckeyes giving the points.
Over/Under Pick for Ohio State vs. Purdue
- Under 48.5 (4 units)
When these two teams met last season, they combined for 45 points, hitting the under against a 56-point total. Of course, all of those points were scored by Ohio State, and we might be in for another one of those one-sided affairs here. While I do have tons of faith in the Buckeyes' offense, they are still averaging just 34.4 points per game in conference play. Purdue doesn’t have the staunchest of defenses, but I also cannot see them yielding 49 points at home. On the flip side, I can see the Ohio State defense keeping the Boilers off the board. The under is 4-2 in the last six meetings.
Take the under.
