Oklahoma losing direction
A 5-0 SU start is in the rearview as the Sooners have dropped two of their last three game, both at home. They are 2-2 SU in SEC play and play three of their remaining four games versus teams ranked in the Top 25.
In terms of offense, Oklahoma ranks 11th in the SEC, averaging 28.4 points per game. Their 376.5 total yards per game ranks 10th in the conference and they’ve fared better with the pass, ranking eighth in the SEC with a 246.4-yard average. John Mateer threw for 223 yards and a touchdown versus Ole Miss. Since tossing three picks versus Texas, the junior has gone two games without one. Mateer has been intercepted six times and sacked 13 times this season while also throwing for 1,780 yards and 8 TDs. The Sooners’ run game averages 130.1 yards per game. Tory Blaylock leads that aspect of the offense with 401 yards and 4 TDs on 93 carries.
The Sooners allowed a season-high 34 points last weekend, but they still possess the top scoring defense in the SEC, allowing just 12.6 points per game. The 240.3 total yards yielded is the fifth-best mark in the country. Opponents average only 155.4 passing yards and 84.9 rushing yards per game versus Oklahoma. Their 29 sacks are second in the conference, complemented by 3 interceptions. R Mason Thomas has a team-high 5.5 sacks, sixth most in the SEC.
The Sooners are banged up on the offensive line, with two players questionable and two out. They are set to start two freshmen at both tackle spots,s with Derek Simmons (leg) doubtful and Troy Everett out for the season.

Offense props Tennessee back up
After getting beat up by then No. 6 Alabama, the Volunteers had a furious response, and Kentucky was the unlucky victim. They are 3-2 against conference opponents and three of their last four games are at home, including a non-conference tilt versus New Mexico State.
Seven different players found the end zone in their rout of Kentucky and the offense boosted their season scoring average to an SEC-best 45.9 points per game. The 510.1 yards per game that they average ranks third in the country, as does their passing game, which averages 321.4 yards each week. Joey Aguilar has a monster performance versus Kentucky, throwing for 373 yards and 3 TDs. He leads the SEC and is fourth in the country with 2,344 passing yards, with 18 TDs and 6 INTs. Their 188.8 rushing yards per game is the sixth-best average in the SEC. DeSean Bishop is fifth in the conference with 652 rushing yards and third with 9 TDs.
Defense hasn’t put forth the same effort as the offense, with the Vols seeing 30.9 points per game scored against them, the second-highest average in the SEC. They are allowing 401.5 total yards per game, also the second most in the conference. Versus the pass, they give up 266.3 yards, and against the run, 135.3 yards per game. They are fourth in the SEC with 27 sacks, and they’ve picked off four passes. Arion Carter is tied for second in the conference with 61 tackles. Dominic Bailey has a team-high 4.5 sacks.
Team notes
- Lance Heard earned SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week honors after last week’s win.
- Colton Hood was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the nation’s best defensive back.
- The Vols are down to their final four games of the regular season, and three of them will be played in Knoxville.
- They are third in the country with 211 first downs.
Oklahoma vs. Tennessee Picks
Spread Pick for Oklahoma vs. Tennessee
- Tennessee -3.5 (5 units)
It’s hard to believe that these two storied programs have met only five times through the years. The Sooners own a 3-2 SU advantage, but Tennessee won the last meeting by 10 points back in 2021. This is an excellent matchup that pits the SEC’s top offense versus the best defense that the conference has to offer. The Vols have faced only one of the top five scoring defenses in the conference, and that was Alabama, which they scored 20 points off of. That was also on the road in front of a wildly hostile crowd. They get to face the Sooners’ staunch defense at home, where they’ve averaged 51.2 points per game this season. The Oklahoma defense struggled against an Ole Miss offense that ranks fourth in the conference. They allowed 315 yards through the air, and with Aguilar coming in red-hot, I believe Tennessee can similarly beat them. The concern for Oklahoma is a banged-up offensive line with some inexperienced tackles protecting Mateer. Both Vols losses have come against a team that was ranked 6th at the time, so they can handle this one.
Take Tennessee giving the points at home.
Over/Under Pick for Oklahoma vs. Tennessee
- Over 55.5 (5 units)
While this game does feature the best scoring defense in the SEC, that same unit also surrendered 34 points last week and must now face off with one of the highest scoring teams in the country. The Volunteers scored 56 points last weekend, the third time they’ve scored at least that much this season and the sixth time they eclipsed 40 points. Oklahoma’s offense isn’t terrible by any stretch, averaging nearly 30 points per game. They’ll get their chances to swing for the fences against a porous Tennessee defense. The Sooners scored exactly 26 points in each of their last two games and have put up at least that much in five games this season.
Take the over.
