UAB Blazers versus Tulsa Golden Hurricane Prediction

The Oklahoma State Cowboys make the short trip to Tulsa for an in-state matchup against the Golden Hurricane on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:45 PM ET in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with ESPNU providing television coverage. Both teams will be making their 2026 season debuts. Oklahoma State is currently favored by approximately 13.5 to 14.5 points depending on the market, while the total is sitting around 61.5. The Cowboys are also substantial moneyline favorites, illustrating the expectation that Oklahoma State should win despite playing away from home. This isn't an ordinary season opener for Oklahoma State. Tulsa stunned the Cowboys 19-12 last season, giving the Golden Hurricane their first victory in the series since 1998. The loss also became a defining moment in Oklahoma State's disastrous season and was followed by a major change in direction for the program. Now the Cowboys return to Tulsa as approximately two-touchdown favorites with an immediate opportunity to demonstrate that 2026 will look considerably different.

Oklahoma State Has an Immediate Opportunity for Redemption

Oklahoma State doesn't need anyone inside the program to explain what happened in this matchup last season. Tulsa went into Stillwater and won 19-12, ending a long losing streak in the series and adding another low point to Oklahoma State's difficult campaign. That result should provide plenty of emotional motivation for the Cowboys entering Saturday.

The difference is that Oklahoma State is beginning a new era. The program underwent major changes after last season, making this less about simply avenging one defeat and more about establishing an entirely different direction. Beating the opponent responsible for one of last year's most damaging results would be an appropriate way to start.

Oddsmakers clearly believe Oklahoma State remains the stronger program. A spread around two touchdowns is significant considering the Cowboys are playing on the road. The market isn't merely asking Oklahoma State to win. At -14.5, the Cowboys need to create at least 15 points of separation.

The Cowboys Need to Prove the Market Right

That's where this handicap becomes more difficult. There is a considerable difference between believing Oklahoma State wins and laying more than two touchdowns.

At -14.5, a 35-21 Oklahoma State victory doesn't cash. Neither does 31-17. The Cowboys need something like 35-20, 38-21 or 34-17 before favorite bettors get to the window. That's a meaningful requirement in the first game of a new season.

The number becomes considerably more appealing at -13.5. Oklahoma State could then win 35-21 or 31-17 and cover. That's why shopping the spread is particularly important here. Crossing through 14 changes the wager considerably.

If Oklahoma State is truly ready to move beyond last season, however, this is exactly the type of game it should control. The Cowboys have the opportunity to establish themselves physically and force Tulsa to prove that last year's upset was something more than an isolated result.

Tulsa Shouldn't Lack Confidence

Tulsa has one advantage that can't be dismissed: the Golden Hurricane already know they can beat Oklahoma State. Last year's 19-12 victory eliminated the psychological barrier that can sometimes exist when a program has repeatedly lost to an in-state opponent.

Tulsa also gets this meeting at home. Oklahoma State fans won't exactly have a difficult trip, so the stadium environment won't resemble a conventional road game, but the Golden Hurricane still avoid traveling to Stillwater. That's meaningful when we're talking about a spread around two touchdowns.

The +14.5 is also a very different proposition than asking Tulsa to win again. The Golden Hurricane can lose by two full touchdowns and still cash because of the hook. A 35-21 Oklahoma State victory is a Tulsa cover. So is 31-17.

That's why Oklahoma State bettors need more than revenge motivation. They need the Cowboys to establish genuine separation.

Last Year's Result Creates an Interesting Contrast

The previous meeting produced only 31 combined points, with Tulsa winning 19-12. Saturday's total is sitting around 61.5, nearly double the scoring from last year's matchup.

Obviously, these aren't identical teams, and carrying last year's scoring environment directly into 2026 would be a mistake. But it illustrates how much offensive improvement the market is anticipating.

A current simulation projects something around Oklahoma State 36, Tulsa 22. That would represent substantially more offense than last season while still producing only 58 combined points.

That's exactly why the Under interests me. We don't need another 19-12 game. There is considerable room between last year's 31 points and the current 61.5 total.

Oklahoma State Can Cover Without Creating a Shootout

The Cowboys don't need this game to become an offensive track meet to cover the spread. In fact, the best path toward Oklahoma State -14.5 probably involves the Cowboys controlling field position and preventing Tulsa from consistently reaching the end zone.

Consider Oklahoma State 38, Tulsa 20. That's an 18-point Cowboys victory and gives Oklahoma State the cover, but the game produces only 58 combined points. A 35-17 final is even better for the Under at 52.

The danger comes if Tulsa contributes somewhere in the upper 20s. If Oklahoma State is going to cover while Tulsa scores 27, the Cowboys need at least 42 points. A 42-27 final sails Over 61.5.

That means the Oklahoma State side and Under are somewhat correlated. We're betting on the Cowboys creating separation without Tulsa contributing enough offense to turn the matchup into a shootout.

Tulsa Needs to Avoid Giving Oklahoma State Short Fields

The Golden Hurricane's biggest problem could be allowing the emotional revenge narrative to accelerate the game. Oklahoma State should arrive motivated to make an early statement after last year's embarrassment.

Tulsa needs to prevent turnovers and special-teams mistakes from giving the Cowboys easy scoring opportunities. If Oklahoma State repeatedly has to drive the length of the field, Tulsa has a much better chance of remaining inside two touchdowns.

That's also important for the Under. Long possessions and sustained drives consume clock. Short fields and turnovers create exactly the type of high-scoring environment that would threaten 61.5.

If Tulsa reaches halftime within approximately one score, the pressure shifts toward Oklahoma State. The Cowboys would then have to continue producing offensively rather than simply protecting a comfortable lead.

The Spread Movement Matters

This is not a wager where I would treat Oklahoma State -13.5 and -14.5 as interchangeable.

At -13.5, we're laying less than two touchdowns. At -14.5, Oklahoma State must win by at least 15. That's an enormous difference considering how many reasonable final scores land on exactly 14.

A 35-21 final wins at -13.5 and loses at -14.5. The same applies to 31-17, 38-24 and 34-20.

For that reason, Oklahoma State -13.5 would be a substantially stronger wager. At -14.5, I'm still willing to back the Cowboys based on the expected talent advantage and the circumstances surrounding this rematch, but I'm much less aggressive.

Oklahoma State vs Tulsa Picks and Prediction

Pick: Oklahoma State -14.5

I'm staying with Oklahoma State -14.5, although I strongly prefer -13.5 if that number is available. Tulsa's 19-12 victory last season gives the Cowboys an obvious motivational angle, but revenge alone isn't enough to justify laying more than two touchdowns. The handicap is based on Oklahoma State being capable of establishing a substantially different level of control in the 2026 opener. The Cowboys are being priced as the clearly superior team and should have enough opportunities over four quarters to eventually create separation. Something around Oklahoma State 38, Tulsa 20 is my working score. Take Oklahoma State -14.5, but shop aggressively for -13.5.

Pick: Under 61.5

I prefer Under 61.5 as the stronger wager. Last year's meeting finished with only 31 combined points, and although I'm expecting considerably more offense this time, the market has given us another 30.5 points to work with. Oklahoma State can score into the upper 30s, cover the spread and still leave substantial room beneath the total if Tulsa stays around 20. A current simulation landing around 36-22 would also finish Under. My preferred 38-20 game script produces 58 combined points. Take Under 61.5.

Final Picks: Oklahoma State -14.5 and Under 61.5
