Oklahoma State Faces a Difficult Trip to Morgantown

Oklahoma State owns the historical series advantage and has won 10 of the 16 meetings. Recent history has been more balanced, however. The teams have split the last four, with West Virginia winning 24-19 in 2022 and 38-14 in 2024 while Oklahoma State won in 2021 and 2023.

The Cowboys enter with an offense that has shown some ability to move the football through both the passing and rushing games. The larger question is whether that production holds up in one of the Big 12’s more difficult road environments.

Oklahoma State needs to prevent West Virginia from building early momentum. Morgantown becomes substantially more difficult when the Mountaineers establish a lead and can lean on their running game. The Cowboys need clean possessions and cannot repeatedly put their defense back on the field after quick three-and-outs.

West Virginia Carries Momentum Home

West Virginia’s 38-27 road victory over No. 25 Virginia is the strongest recent data point in this matchup. The Mountaineers went into Charlottesville and generated 38 points against a ranked opponent, demonstrating both offensive upside and an ability to perform away from Morgantown.

Now they return home, where the environment should be considerably more favorable. West Virginia has also already demonstrated that it can beat Oklahoma State convincingly, having won 38-14 in Stillwater in the most recent meeting.

The concern is avoiding a letdown after the ranked road victory. Oklahoma State has enough offensive capability to punish a sloppy performance. West Virginia needs to approach this as a conference game rather than assuming the Virginia victory guarantees continued momentum.

West Virginia gets the side based on the combination of home field and current momentum. Winning 38-27 at ranked Virginia provides stronger evidence than simply beating an overmatched opponent, and the Mountaineers have won two of the last three meetings with Oklahoma State. At less than a touchdown, West Virginia is my preferred side.

Pick: Over 53.5 or Lower

West Virginia just scored 38 against Virginia, while Oklahoma State has enough offensive production to contribute in Morgantown. Recent meetings have also shown that this matchup can open up when one side begins creating explosive plays. At 53.5 or below, a game around 31-24 or 34-24 gets us over the target.
