We have an interesting nonconference game in Week 6 of the college football season as the Oregon State Beavers will be heading to Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina on Saturday afternoon to face off against the App State Mountaineers in our Beavers vs Mountaineers prediction. The game is airing on ESPN+, so this game is going to be nationally televised as both teams are struggling to begin this year. The Beavers (0-5) are coming off a 27-24 overtime home loss to the Houston Cougars on Friday. The Mountaineers (2-2) are on a two-game losing streak as they are coming off Saturday’s 47-14 road loss against the Boise State Broncos. Find the edge fast with NCAAF picks for Oregon State Beavers vs. App State Mountaineers.

Beavers Looking for a Win

The Oregon State Beavers are looking to figure things out as the season is getting lost, as they are now 0-5 heading into this game. The Beavers’ offense has been struggling as they are averaging 17.4 points per game, ranking 123rd in the sport. Quarterback Maalik Murphy has room to improve this season as he has completed 102-of-176 (58.0%) of his passes for 1,165 yards with seven passing touchdowns to five interceptions while also adding 18 rushes for -10 yards (-0.6 yards per carry) with one rushing touchdown. Murphy is now listed as questionable on the injury report wth a hand injury. If Murphy can't go, Gabarri Johnson would step in. He's thrown just seven passes this season, completing three for 16 yards. He's also rushed eight times for 14 yards. Wide receiver Trent Walker has been able to be a legitimate threat in the passing game as he has 30 catches for 405 yards (13.5 yards per reception) without finding the end zone.

The defense for Oregon State has been terrible as they are 127th in college football as they are giving up 36.6 points per game. The Beavers need to step up at applying pressure as they have recorded six sacks, 16 pass deflections, four interceptions, one forced fumble, and zero fumble recoveries.

Mountaineers trying to get back on winning track

The App State Mountaineers need to figure out how to get more consistent if they want to be in a better position after their 47-14 road loss against the Boise State Broncos last week. The Mountaineers have lost two straight since beating FCS Lindenwood on Sept. 6.Β  App State is just 98th in the country with 22.5 points per game scored. Quarterback AJ Swann has completed 76-of-127 (59.8%) of his passes for 943 yards with six passing touchdowns to six interceptions while also running 12 times for 25 yards (2.1 yards per attempt), but has failed to record any rushing touchdowns.

The defense for the Mountaineers has been playing at a mediocre level as they are giving up 27.2 points per game, which is 97th in college football. They allow 324 yards per game, which rands 46 and just 84.2 rushing yards per game (13th). Their defense has turned the pressure up to get them to that point as they have recorded 11 sacks, 16 pass deflections, four interceptions, four forced fumbles, and a single fumble recovery. On offense, they are averaging 435.8 yards per game (46th) and 284.5 passing yards (27th). This is a pass-happy squad that throws the ball 41 times per game to rank ninth in the nation.

  • Running back Kanye Roberts: Knee (OUT)

Oregon State Beavers vs. App State Mountaineers Pick

Spread Pick for Oregon State vs. App State

  • App State Mountaineers -115 (4 units)

The App State Mountaineers are clearly the better team, and putting my trust in a winless Oregon State Beavers program feels way too risky. That's also a long trip from the West Coast to North Carolina. Maalik Murphy has a 48.4 completion percentage on the road this season (if he plays) and the Mountaineers' defense is the best unit that will be on the field. App State can run the football to get drives going while Oregon State allows 4.6 yards per carry this season. Go with the App State Mountaineers to walk away with a win at home here.

Over/Under Pick for Oregon State vs. App State

  • Over 53.5 (4 units)

Two struggling defenses mean these offenses should be able to move the football without much concern. Oregon State has gone over in three of their last five games. They gave up 86 points in their last two road games. Each team saw the over hit in their most recent game heading into this matchup, so these defenses proved they can struggle. Both pass defenses have struggled to force incompletions so far this year, so expect Murphy to get a bump in his passing there to keep drives alive. All in all, take over 53.5 points to hit in this game.
