Conner Weigman looks to lead the Cougars over the Mountaineers

The Oregon State Beavers begin their new Pac-12 era with a difficult road trip to face the No. 23 Houston Cougars on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET at TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas, with ESPN and Disney+ providing coverage. Both teams enter their season opener at 0-0. Houston is currently favored by 20.5 points, while the total is set at 51.5. ESPN Analytics gives Houston a 91.3% probability of winning. Get into the action with our free college football picks.

Oregon State Tries to Reverse a Poor Finish

Oregon State struggled badly during the closing stretch of 2025. The Beavers lost three consecutive games to finish the year, falling 21-17 to Sam Houston, 31-14 to Tulsa and 32-8 to Washington State.

The last two games were particularly concerning because Oregon State was outscored 63-22. The Beavers now face a ranked Houston team on the road, creating a difficult opening assignment. Oregon State needs substantial improvement offensively if it wants to keep this matchup within three touchdowns.

The +20.5 spread does provide some protection, but Houston's recent form and home-field advantage make backing the Beavers difficult.

Houston Carries Momentum Into 2026

Houston ended 2025 in considerably better form. The Cougars won three of their final four games, including a 38-35 bowl victory over LSU and a 31-24 road win at Baylor. The Cougars' only loss during that four-game stretch was a narrow 17-14 defeat against TCU. Houston therefore enters 2026 after playing consistently competitive football.

ESPN Analytics gives Houston a 91.3% win probability, and the betting market has moved in the same direction. The opening spread was Houston -18.5 before moving to -20.5. Houston should have the opportunity to control this matchup defensively and force Oregon State to prove it can generate significantly more offense than it showed late last season.

Oregon State vs Houston Picks and Prediction

Pick: Houston -20.5

I'm willing to lay the points with Houston -20.5. This is one of the spots where I don't want the big underdog. Oregon State finished last season by losing three straight and scored only 39 combined points during that stretch. Houston, meanwhile, won three of its final four and finished by beating LSU 38-35. The Cougars have the stronger recent trajectory, home-field advantage and a 91.3% ESPN win probability. Something around Houston 35, Oregon State 13 clears the current number. Take Houston -20.5.

Pick: Under 51.5

The Under 51.5 pairs well with Houston. Oregon State's late-season offensive struggles make it difficult to project a major contribution from the Beavers, while Houston can cover without this becoming a shootout. A 35-13 result totals only 48 points, while 34-10 and 31-14 also stay comfortably below the number. Take Under 51.5.

Final Picks: Houston -20.5 and Under 51.5
