Pittsburgh 4-2 overall, 2-0 after quarterback change
The Pittsburgh Panthers are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play heading into Week 8, only a week removed from knocking the No. 25 Florida State Seminoles firmly out of the rankings with a 34-31 road upset win. That win vaulted Pittsburgh up to sixth in the ACC standings, behind only No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 18 Virginia, Duke, SMU, and No. 2 Miami.
Pittsburgh didn't pull ahead of Florida State all at once, but they scored first and never trailed by more than seven points. Freshman back Ja'Kyrian Turner scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the Panthers up 34-24, less than four minutes before the clock expired on the 34-31 win. Turner finished the game with 44 yards and two touchdowns on only 10 carries. Freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel completed 21 of 29 passes for 321 yards, averaging a 72.4 completion percentage and 11.1 yards per attempt in only his second career start after taking the job from Eli Holstein. Heintschel threw two interceptions and was sacked five times against the Seminoles, but still managed to lead the team in rushing with 64 yards on 16 carries. Senior lead back Desmond Reid did little on the ground, but led the team through the air with 155 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches.

The Panthers average 309.3 passing yards and 39.8 points per game–ranking 11th and 15th among FBS teams, respectively. Those aren't the numbers you'd expect from a team that's two weeks removed from making a voluntary quarterback change, but it's hard to argue with the 2-0 record they've posted since Heintschel took the job.
Syracuse struggling in absence of Angeli
The Syracuse Orange are 3-3 overall, 1-2 in conference play, and 13th in the 17-team ACC standings heading into Week 8. They'll be home for their meeting with longtime rival Pittsburgh after a Week 7 bye, but they're still 0-2 in their last two games after falling by wide margins to Duke (38-3) and SMU (31-18).
It's been tough sledding for sophomore quarterback Rickie Collins, who inherited the starting job after Steve Angeli tore his Achilles tendon in the team's 34-21 upset win over Clemson. Collins completed 24 of 37 passes for 229 yards against Duke, then only 22 of 45 passes for 279 yards against SMU. He's thrown one touchdown and four interceptions over the two games, and has completed only 55.2 percent of his passes for 6.3 yards per attempt on the season. Prior to his injury, Angeli had a completion percentage of 62.8, a YPA average of 8.4, and a 10-2 TD-INT ratio.
Despite all of that, Syracuse managed to outgain SMU 389-370 in their 31-18 loss. Syracuse went down 24-3 in the second quarter and carried that deficit into the fourth, but scored touchdowns on each of their two fourth-quarter possessions that didn't end in picks. The Orange went for it on fourth down five times in the game, converting only twice–three of their first-half possessions ended in turnovers on downs, all on plays that went for no gain with two or fewer yards to go.
Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse Pick
Spread Pick for Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse
- Pittsburgh -10.5 (-110) (4 Units)
The Panthers are 2-0 against the spread since making the change to Heintschel at quarterback, covering by far more than -6.5 in their 48-7 win over Boston College and +10.5 in their 34-31 victory over Florida State. They're hosting an Orange team that's 0-2 after making a quarterback change for less voluntary reasons. Pitt has won 17 of the past 20 meetings in this series. Syracuse is 3-2-1 against the spread this season, but they've only covered against FBS teams in games they've entered at 17.5-point underdogs. Pittsburgh should win this game, and they haven't won this season without also covering the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse
- Under 54.5 (-105) (4 Units)
The Team Total Under is 2-0 in the last two games Syracuse has played, and 2-0 in games they've played at home against FBS opponents. Unless Collins has made significant strides in the bye week, it's hard to imagine the Orange coming out in Week 8 and looking vastly better on offense than they did against Duke and SMU. Pittsburgh has done well since plugging Heintschel in at quarterback, but the offense scoring 48 points and racking up 503 yards against the Boston College Eagles–who have yet to beat an FBS opponent–isn't a good measuring stick for what they'll do against Syracuse.
