Panthers Bounce Back, Smash Eagles

It’s the 11th season of the Pat Narduzzi era in Pittsburgh, and his Pitt Panthers have logged a cumulative record of 75-58 (47-37 ACC) during his tenure. That includes this season’s 3-2 mark. The lone losses this season came against West Virginia (31-24 OT) and Louisville (34-27). Following the loss to the Cardinals, the Panthers bounced back with a dominant victory over Boston College (48-7) last weekend. They’re 1-1 in ACC play, which puts them in the middle of the conference standings. Pittsburgh is 3-1 ATS and they’ve gone 3-1-1 to the over.

Coach Narduzzi has benched QB Eli Holstein and opted for freshman Mason Heintschel instead. Heintschel has 359 yards on a 73.3% completion rate, adding four touchdowns and no interceptions. The top receiver for the Panthers is Raphael Williams Jr., who has 320 yards and four touchdowns on 18 catches. RB Juelz Goff has handled a bulk of the rushing work, logging 175 yards and three touchdowns on 45 carries (3.9 YPC).

  • Pittsburgh’s offense has been elite this season, ranking 17th in scoring (36.0 PPG), while putting up 413.8 yards per game (41st).
  • On the defensive side, the Panthers are 43rd this season, allowing 22.3 points per game. In terms of yardage, they’re 21st, conceding 314.8 yards per contest.

#25 Seminoles Drop Second Straight Game

Coach Mike Norvell and his Florida State Seminoles are coming off of that embarrassing 2-10 (1-7 ACC) campaign a year ago. FSU got the season started with a major home win over #8 Alabama (31-17), and eventually got out to a 3-0 start. However, they’ve since dropped back-to-back conference games, losing on the road to Virginia (46-38 2OT) and at home to #3 Miami (28-22). They’re in 16th out of 17 teams in the ACC at 0-2. The Seminoles are 3-2 ATS and they’ve gone 4-1 to the over.

Transfer QB Tommy Castellanos (formerly Boston College) is the man under center in Tallahassee this season, and he has been decent. The veteran quarterback has 1,120 passing yards on a 60.9% completion rate, adding six touchdowns and five interceptions. WR Duce Robinson is the top choice with 433 yards and three touchdowns on 23 receptions. RB Gavin Sawchuk has handled a bulk of the rushing workload, going for 281 yards and six touchdowns on 53 totes (5.3 YPC). Castallones also has 274 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 57 carries (4.8 YPC).

  • Offensively, the Seminoles are scoring 39.3 points per game (13th), while averaging 519.3 yards per week (fifth).
  • Defensively, they are 67th in the country this year, conceding 25.3 points per game. They’re allowing 331.3 yards per contest, which is 30th.

Pittsburgh vs. Florida State Pick

Spread Pick for Pittsburgh vs. Florida State

  • Pittsburgh Panthers +10.5 (-110) (5 units)

I’m really not sure what to make of this Florida State team. They have that nice win against #8 Alabama (31-17) to start the year, but they’ve since beaten up on two creampuff opponents and then lost a pair of games. I think the Seminoles are going to end up being a decent, but not overpowering team and land in the 8-4 SU or 9-3 SU range. Their biggest issue is turning the ball over, where they’re 116th in turnover margin per game (-1.0).

With all of that being said, I’m taking the points with Pittsburgh. For starters, the Panthers are 3-2 SU and they’ve yet to lose a game by more than seven points. We’re also on the right side of a key number of 10 points, which is an advantage when betting on football. This Pitt offense is a juggernaut, and considering FSU has allowed 28+ points in back-to-back games, I think freshman QB Mason Heintschel and the Panthers can keep this game close.

Over/Under Pick for Pittsburgh vs. Florida State

  • Over 57.5 (-115) (5 units)

These are two powerhouse offenses, so I’m not going to overthink this one – give me the over. Aside from the turnover issues, Tommy Castellanos (five interceptions) is a lethal quarterback at the collegiate level. He has 1,100+ passing yards, as well as 274 rushing yards. Even when only counting the games against FBS completion, the Seminoles are still averaging 39.3 points per game (13th) and putting up 519.3 yards per contest (fifth).

On the other side, Pittsburgh is averaging 36.0 points per game (17th) against FBS-level opposition. They’ve scored at least 24 points in all five games this season. Florida State’s defense has shown plenty of signs of weakness recently, so I expect to see a shootout in Tallahassee. The over is 5-2 in Pitt’s last seven games, while going 4-1 in FSU’s games this year. Give me the over.
