Prairie View Explodes Against Its Rival

Prairie View enters Waco with considerable momentum after dismantling Texas Southern 52-14 in the Labor Day Classic. The Panthers turned what appeared capable of being a competitive rivalry game into a rout with a 28-point third quarter.

Tevin Carter was the centerpiece of the offensive explosion, throwing four touchdown passes and adding another score on the ground. Prairie View also received an immediate special-teams spark when Jahbari Kuykendall returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

The Panthers' defense and special teams continually created advantageous situations. Prairie View generated pressure, recovered fumbles and capitalized on Texas Southern mistakes while turning the game into a blowout after halftime.

There are some reasons for caution despite the 38-point victory. Texas Southern actually controlled stretches of possession and generated first downs, while 14 penalties and special-teams mistakes helped Prairie View create separation. Baylor is unlikely to be nearly as generous.

Still, scoring 52 points gives Prairie View confidence entering its FBS opportunity. The Panthers aren't arriving in Waco with an offense searching for answers.

Baylor Looks to Finish Drives

Baylor came within one play of potentially beating Auburn in its opener before losing 17-16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Bears scored a late touchdown to pull within one but failed on the potential game-winning two-point conversion.

The final score didn't accurately represent how much offense Baylor generated. The Bears outgained Auburn 436-389, ran 99 offensive plays and accumulated 27 first downs.

DJ Lagway threw for 333 yards, while Gavin Freeman produced 154 receiving yards. Dawson Pendergrass led Baylor with 88 rushing yards as the Bears demonstrated they could move the football both through the air and on the ground.

The problem was converting all of that production into points. Baylor scored only 16 despite generating 436 yards and possessing the football for more than 32 minutes. The Bears converted seven of 22 third downs and repeatedly left potential points on the field.

Prairie View represents a major reduction in competition. If Baylor produces anywhere near 436 yards again, the Bears should have substantially more success turning those drives into touchdowns.

Prairie View vs Baylor Picks and Prediction

Pick: Prairie View +35.5 or Better

With no dependable conventional sportsbook spread available yet, Prairie View +35.5 or better is my target. Baylor clearly possesses the superior roster and should win comfortably, but Prairie View just demonstrated enough explosiveness to make laying five-plus touchdowns unattractive. Carter gives the Panthers a quarterback capable of creating scoring opportunities, while special teams can manufacture field position. Baylor also has little incentive to run up the score once the outcome is secure. Take Prairie View if the market gives us +35.5 or better.

Pick: Over 55.5

The Over 55.5 is my preferred total target. Baylor generated 436 yards against Auburn and now drops significantly in defensive competition, making a 40-plus-point performance realistic. Prairie View just scored 52 against Texas Southern and has enough offensive and special-teams explosiveness to contribute. Something around 45-14 or 45-17 would be enough to clear this target without Prairie View seriously threatening the upset. Take the Over if the total is set at 55.5 or lower.

Final Picks: Prairie View +35.5 or better and Over 55.5 or lower
