Purdue Has Been Much More Competitive Than Expected

Purdue opened the season with a convincing 44-19 victory over Indiana State, snapping the program's long losing streak and immediately providing some optimism after a difficult 2025 season. The Boilermakers then faced a much more meaningful test against Wake Forest and nearly earned their second consecutive victory, eventually losing 38-36 in overtime.

That result deserves more respect than the 1-1 record might receive. Purdue entered the Wake Forest matchup as approximately a three-point underdog and pushed the game into overtime before losing by two. The Boilermakers have now scored 80 points through two games, and their offense has been particularly effective when drives reach scoring territory. Purdue currently ranks among the nation's best teams in red-zone scoring percentage and has converted 50% of its third downs.

The obvious concern is the trip to Pasadena. Purdue is making a cross-country journey and facing an undefeated UCLA team that has won its first two games by double digits. Still, the Boilermakers don't need to win this game to offer betting value. A 14.5-point spread gives Purdue more than two touchdowns of protection, and its early offensive efficiency suggests the Boilermakers have enough scoring ability to remain competitive.

UCLA Has Opened the Season With Two Impressive Wins

UCLA's first two games under its new coaching staff have produced exactly the kind of start the Bruins needed. They opened by traveling to Berkeley and beating California 45-24, immediately demonstrating that their rebuilt offense could produce points against Big Ten competition. UCLA then returned to the Rose Bowl and defeated San Diego State 28-10.

The San Diego State victory was particularly interesting because the game was scoreless at halftime. Rather than becoming frustrated, UCLA completely took control after the break and scored 28 second-half points. The Bruins' defense held San Diego State to 10 points, giving UCLA a second consecutive victory by at least 18 points.

There are still areas Purdue can attack. UCLA is allowing opponents to convert approximately 39% of their third downs, while Purdue has converted 50% of its own opportunities. The Bruins have also been heavily penalized, averaging around 90 penalty yards per game. Those mistakes may not matter against weaker opponents, but they can become significant when trying to cover more than two touchdowns against a Purdue team that has demonstrated it can finish drives.

Pick: Purdue +14.5

Take Purdue +14.5. UCLA deserves to be favored and remains my straight-up winner, but the current spread asks the Bruins to beat a competitive Big Ten opponent by more than two touchdowns. Purdue just took Wake Forest to overtime and has scored 36 or more points in both games. The Boilermakers are also converting half of their third downs and have been excellent in the red zone. UCLA should eventually take control, but +14.5 crosses the important two-touchdown threshold and gives Purdue enough protection to be the better betting side.

Pick: Over 52.5

Take the Over if the total is set at 52.5 or lower. Purdue has scored 44 and 36 points, while UCLA has produced 45 and 28. The Bruins' defense looked excellent against San Diego State, but Purdue represents a more efficient offensive challenge and should contribute enough points to force UCLA to remain aggressive. A projected UCLA 34, Purdue 24 gives the Bruins their third straight victory, Purdue the cover and the Over.
