Rutgers Grabs A Much-Needed Win

Rutgers snapped its four-game skid in dramatic fashion last week, edging Purdue 27-24 on a walk-off field goal. It was the kind of win Greg Schiano’s team desperately needed, not just to keep bowl hopes alive but to restore some confidence in a group that had been sliding since its 3-0 start. Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was the star, throwing for 359 yards and a touchdown while also adding a rushing score. His connection with wideout KJ Duff was unstoppable, as Duff exploded for 241 receiving yards on six catches, including a 72-yard touchdown that swung momentum back to the Scarlet Knights. Running back Antwan Raymond chipped in with 116 yards and his 10th rushing touchdown of the season, giving Rutgers a balanced attack that Purdue struggled to contain.

The Scarlet Knights’ offense has quietly become one of the more dangerous passing units in the Big Ten, averaging 286.5 yards per game through the air, which ranks second in the conference. Kaliakmanis has already surpassed 2,200 passing yards on the season, and with Duff and Ian Strong both capable of stretching defenses vertically, Rutgers has the firepower to test Illinois’ secondary. The key, however, will be protection. Purdue sacked Kaliakmanis five times, and Illinois has enough of a pass rush to cause problems if Rutgers’ offensive line doesn’t hold up. Still, when the Scarlet Knights are in rhythm, they can move the ball on anyone, and that was evident in their 543-yard outburst last week.

Defensively, Rutgers remains a work in progress. They allowed Purdue to average nearly eight yards per carry, and that’s been a recurring issue all season. The Scarlet Knights are giving up 181 rushing yards per game, which ranks near the bottom of the Big Ten, and opponents have been able to control tempo against them. On the bright side, the defense came up with the game’s biggest play when Farell Gnago forced a late fumble that set up the winning field goal. That opportunistic streak has been there at times, but consistency has not. Against Illinois, Rutgers will need to tighten up against the run and avoid giving Luke Altmyer short fields, because the Illini have shown they can capitalize quickly when defenses break down.

Illinois Takes A Bad Loss To Washington

Illinois enters this matchup at 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten, looking to bounce back after a humbling 42-25 loss at Washington. The Illini actually held a brief 17-14 lead late in the second quarter, but turnovers and defensive breakdowns allowed the Huskies to seize control. Quarterback Luke Altmyer threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns but also tossed a pair of interceptions, and the Illini defense simply couldn’t get off the field, allowing Washington to score on six of its eight drives. It was a reminder that while Illinois has the talent to compete, mistakes against quality opponents can snowball quickly.

Offensively, Altmyer has been steady throughout the season, completing over 71 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He’s not a flashy quarterback, but he’s efficient and capable of extending plays with his legs, as shown by his 48 rushing yards against Washington. Hank Beatty has emerged as his top target, hauling in 45 catches for 690 yards, while Collin Dixon has been a reliable red-zone option with four touchdown grabs. The run game has been inconsistent, averaging just 121 yards per game, but Kaden Feagin has shown flashes of being a difference-maker when given space. Against a Rutgers defense that has struggled to stop the run, Illinois will likely try to establish balance early to keep pressure off Altmyer.

Defensively, Illinois has been up and down. They’re allowing 27.5 points per game, which ranks in the bottom third nationally, and the secondary has been particularly vulnerable, giving up nearly 247 passing yards per contest. That’s a concern against a Rutgers team that just lit up Purdue through the air. Still, the Illini have playmakers at all three levels, with linebacker Gabe Jacas leading the pass rush and defensive back Matthew Bailey anchoring the secondary. The challenge will be containing Duff and Strong without giving up too much underneath, while also finding a way to slow down Raymond on the ground. If Illinois can generate pressure on Kaliakmanis and force him into mistakes, they’ll be in position to protect home field and move one step closer to bowl eligibility.

Rutgers vs Illinois Pick

Rutgers vs Illinois Spread Pick

  • Illinois -12.5 (5 Units)

Backing Illinois -12.5 makes sense because their strengths line up directly with Rutgers’ weaknesses. The Scarlet Knights have been shredded on the ground all season, giving up nearly 181 rushing yards per game, and Illinois has the personnel to exploit that with Kaden Feagin and a steady offensive line. Even if the Illini’s rushing attack hasn’t been dominant week to week, this is the kind of matchup where they can control tempo, wear down the defense, and open up play-action opportunities for Luke Altmyer. With Altmyer completing over 70 percent of his passes and Hank Beatty emerging as a reliable go-to target, Illinois has the balance to keep Rutgers off-balance and build a lead.

On the defensive side, Illinois should be able to limit the explosive plays that Rutgers thrives on. KJ Duff torched Purdue last week, but Illinois has the secondary talent to keep him in check, and their pass rush led by Gabe Jacas is capable of making Athan Kaliakmanis uncomfortable in the pocket. If the Illini can generate pressure and force Rutgers into third-and-long situations, it neutralizes the Scarlet Knights’ vertical passing game and exposes their shaky offensive line. Combine that with Illinois’ ability to capitalize on turnovers, and the Illini look well-positioned to not only win but cover the number at home.

Rutgers vs Illinois Over/Under Pick

  • Over 62.5 (5 Units)

The over 62.5 looks like a strong angle because both teams have shown they can move the ball and neither defense has been consistent enough to trust. Rutgers just put up 543 total yards against Purdue with Athan Kaliakmanis and KJ Duff shredding secondaries, while Illinois has been efficient behind Luke Altmyer, who’s completing over 71 percent of his passes and has a reliable target in Hank Beatty. Add in the fact that Rutgers is giving up nearly 181 rushing yards per game and Illinois’ defense has been surrendering close to 27.5 points per contest, and you’ve got two units that can be exploited. With explosive playmakers on both sides and defenses prone to breakdowns, this matchup has the makings of a high-scoring shootout that clears the number.
