The top team in the country goes off early on Saturday, so be sure to grab our Rutgers vs. Ohio State predictions now! The Scarlet Knights (5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS) are coming off of a bye week but prior to that they took down Maryland, 35-20, as -1 favorites at home. The No. 1 Buckeyes (10-0 SU, 8-1-1 ATS) remained on top of the rankings with a 48-10 win over UCLA last week as -33 home favorites. Kickoff from “The Horseshoe” is scheduled for Noon EST and when it comes to college football selections, our College Football predictions are stellar.

Rutgers still fighting for something

The Scarlet Knights are down to their final two games, needing a win to earn a bowl berth. They are 2-1 SU in their last three games, and the 35 points scored versus Maryland their last time out was their best offensive output in Big Ten play this season.

Rutgers comes into this game with an offense averaging 29.9 points per game this season, ninth in the Big Ten. They average 420.5 total yards, sixth in the conference, with 277.4 passing yards and 143.1 yards per game on the ground. Athan Kaliakmanis is second in the conference with 2,705 passing yards. He’s completed 62.3% of his passes and has 17 TDs, 7 INTs and has been sacked 29 times, most in the Big Ten. KJ Duff has been his top target, catching 53 passes for 923 yards, second most in the Big Ten. Antwan Raymond is also second in the conference with 1,000 rushing yards.

The Scarlet Knights on defense are giving up 30 points per game, 16th in the Big Ten. In the yardage department they are giving up 425.5 per game, including 229 passing yards and 196.5 rushing yards per game. The team has 10 sacks and 5 interceptions. Three players have over 50 tackles, with Jett Elad leading the group with 59. The defensive back also leads the team with 2 interceptions. Bradley Weaver and Eric O’Neill each have a team-high 2.5 sacks.

Everything coming into focus for Ohio State

The Buckeyes have been the most well-oiled machine in college football this season. With No. 18 Michigan looming next week, they are looking to go in their season finale undefeated for the fourth straight season.

Ohio State’s offense is fourth in the Big Ten, averaging 37.5 points and 441.3 total yards per game. They average 279.5 passing yards and 161.8 rushing yards per game. Freshman Julian Sayin is third in the Big Ten with 2,675 passing yards. He has completed 80.1% of his passes, the top mark in the country, and has 25 TDs, 4 INTs and 6 sacks. Jeremiah Smith is tied for the conference lead with 10 receiving TDs as part of his 69 catches for 902 yards. Bo Jackson sits seventh in the Big Ten with 725 rushing yards on 110 carries.

The Buckeyes boast one of the top defenses in the country, ranking first in scoring defense (7.5 points per game) and total defense (212.6 yards per game), and they are second in the nation in both passing (131.2 yards per game) and rushing (81.4 yards per game). The team has recorded 25 sacks and picked off 6 passes.  Caden Curry is third in the conference with 7 sacks and Arvell Reese is in sixth with 6.5 sacks. Reese also leads the team with 58 tackles, tied with Sonny Styles.

Team notes

  • Carnell Tate is second in the Big Ten, averaging 18.2 yards per reception.
  • Eight different Ohio State players have been named semifinalists for a major postseason award.
  • The defense has allowed only 128 first downs all season, fewest in FBS.
  • Dating back to last season, the Buckeyes have the nation’s longest winning streak, 14 games.

Rutgers vs. Ohio State Picks

Spread Pick for Rutgers vs. Ohio State

  • Rutgers +31.5 (5 units)

These two met last in 2023, a game Ohio State won by 19 points on the road, as -18-point favorites. Ohio State no doubt has their eyes slightly diverted to what lies ahead in the final week of the regular season. They most certainly do not want another debacle like the last three seasons, so their focus might not be fully there. It doesn’t need to be in order to pick off the win here. However, this is a massive spread to cover. Granted, the Buckeyes are at home, but the Scarlet Knights are no pushover on the offensive end. With an extra week of preparation, I expect Rutgers has a solid enough game plan to stay close enough. They are also a well-disciplined group and won’t shoot themselves in the foot with bad penalties.

Take the Scarlet Knights getting the points.

Over/Under Pick for Rutgers vs. Ohio State

  • Over 54 (5 units)

This matchup features two offenses that are in the top half of the Big Ten in terms of scoring, each averaging over 29 points per game. Rutgers has a porous defense, so Ohio State should get plenty of points. The Buckeyes' defense is going to hold the Scarlet Knights back a bit, but the visitors should still get the scoreboard moving. They scored at least 17 points in four of their last seven games. Ohio State scored at least 34 points in six straight. The over is 5-0 in the last five meetings between the teams.

Take the over.
