The Sacramento State Hornets travel to Ypsilanti to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+. This is more than a season opener for Sacramento State, as the Hornets will make their FBS debut and play their first game as a member of the Mid-American Conference. Eastern Michigan is currently favored by 8.5 points, with the total set at 52.5. Get ready for all the college football action with our free college football picks.

Sacramento State went 7-5 last season, but there has been substantial turnover since then. New head coach Alonzo Carter takes over a program that added approximately 75 new players during the offseason. Eastern Michigan finished 4-8 overall and 3-5 in MAC play last season and now has the opportunity to open 2026 at home against the conference's newest member.

Sacramento State Begins a New Era

There may not be another team in college football undergoing a more dramatic transition than Sacramento State. The Hornets are moving from the FCS to the FBS, joining a new conference and beginning the Alonzo Carter era simultaneously. Carter becomes the program's fourth head coach since 2022, so establishing continuity will be one of the biggest challenges facing Sacramento State this season.

Quarterback Carson Conklin gives the Hornets an experienced option to build around offensively. Sacramento State also retained running back Jamar Curtis, who averaged better than four yards per carry while rushing for more than 150 yards on only 37 attempts before an injury limited his 2025 season. Linebacker Derek Houston returns on defense after recording 32 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in six games last season.

The bigger concern is how quickly Sacramento State's rebuilt roster comes together. With roughly 75 newcomers, the Hornets are essentially trying to establish their identity on the fly. Opening on the road against an established FBS opponent is difficult enough; doing it in Sacramento State's first MAC game increases the challenge.

Eastern Michigan Has the Experience Advantage

Eastern Michigan is coming off a disappointing 4-8 season, but the Eagles have something particularly valuable for an opening-week matchup: experience at quarterback. Noah Kim returns for Eastern Michigan after leading an offense that finished among the MAC's most productive passing attacks last season.

That continuity could become especially important against Sacramento State's rebuilt roster. The Hornets may eventually develop into a competitive MAC team, but the first game is a difficult place to expect dozens of newcomers to operate together flawlessly. Eastern Michigan doesn't have to be spectacular offensively to control this matchup. Sustaining drives, protecting the football and forcing Sacramento State to play from behind would put the Eagles in a favorable position.

Home field also matters here. Sacramento State is making a cross-country trip for its first game as an FBS program while Eastern Michigan gets to open its 135th varsity season at Rynearson Stadium. The Eagles have their own questions entering 2026, but they don't face nearly the same level of organizational transition as their opponent.

Sacramento State Hornets vs Eastern Michigan Eagles Picks and Prediction

Pick: Eastern Michigan Eagles -8.5

Eastern Michigan is the side pick. Sacramento State has enough talent to make its first FBS season interesting, but asking a roster featuring approximately 75 newcomers to immediately function efficiently in a road conference game is a significant challenge. Eastern Michigan's experience at quarterback and familiarity with MAC competition provide the Eagles with the more stable foundation entering Week 0. If Eastern Michigan can establish an early lead, Sacramento State could have trouble staying within one possession. Take Eastern Michigan -8.5.

Pick: Under 52.5

The under is the total pick. Sacramento State is installing a new system under a new coaching staff while integrating an enormous number of new players, which makes offensive consistency difficult to project in the opener. Eastern Michigan should have opportunities to score, but the Eagles don't necessarily need to play at an aggressive pace if they establish control. A game finishing somewhere around Eastern Michigan 30, Sacramento State 17 would put the Eagles comfortably inside the number while keeping the game below the posted total. Take Under 52.5.
