Troy Trojans at Buffalo Bulls Picks

Sam Houston travels to Troy, Alabama, to face the Trojans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with ESPN+ providing coverage. Both teams will be making their 2026 season debuts in an FBS-versus-FBS nonconference matchup. Troy is currently favored by approximately 15 to 16.5 points depending on the sportsbook, while the total sits around 53.5. With more than two touchdowns available at the upper end of the market, the spread deserves a closer look. Get into the action with our free college football picks.

Sam Houston Gets More Than Two Touchdowns

Sam Houston enters 2026 looking for a significant turnaround after a difficult 2025 campaign. The Bearkats struggled to generate consistent results and finished last season with a 56-16 loss to FIU, so there is plenty to correct entering the opener. Starting on the road against Troy is a difficult assignment, but the market isn't asking Sam Houston to win. The Bearkats are getting as many as 16.5 points, which gives them considerable room to absorb a double-digit defeat and still cover.

The most important task for Sam Houston will be avoiding the mistakes that allow a home favorite to create easy separation. The Bearkats cannot repeatedly give Troy short fields through turnovers, poor special-teams execution or unsuccessful possessions deep in their own territory. If Sam Houston makes Troy consistently drive the length of the field, the Bearkats can reduce the number of possessions and keep the margin manageable. Getting through the opening quarter without falling behind by multiple touchdowns would be particularly important.

Sam Houston also doesn't need a huge offensive performance to make +16.5 valuable. Reaching somewhere around 17 to 21 points could force Troy to score into the mid-to-upper 30s to cover. If the Bearkats get to 20, for example, Troy needs at least 37 points to beat +16.5. That's why modest offensive production matters considerably more to the spread than it does to the outright result.

Troy Has the Experience and Home-Field Advantage

Troy enters the opener with several reasons for optimism, beginning with continuity at quarterback. The Trojans return both quarterbacks who started games last season, giving the offense experience at the most important position rather than requiring Troy to completely reset for Week 1. That should help the Trojans settle into the game more quickly, particularly while playing in front of their home crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

There is also proven production returning defensively. Troy brings back the defender who led the Sun Belt in sacks last season, giving the Trojans an established pass-rushing presence against a Sam Houston offense that cannot afford to spend the evening facing repeated long-yardage situations. If Troy controls first down and consistently creates obvious passing downs, the Trojans should have opportunities to generate sacks, turnovers and favorable field position. That's the clearest route toward turning a manageable lead into the three-score advantage required to cover this spread.

The issue for Troy bettors is that -16.5 remains a substantial number against another FBS opponent. Troy can control most of the game, win comfortably and still fail to cover. A 31-17 victory is a two-touchdown win but cashes Sam Houston +16.5. The same applies to 34-20. Troy needs something closer to 34-17, 37-20 or 38-21 before favorite bettors get across the finish line, which makes the number considerably more demanding than simply asking the Trojans to win their opener.

Sam Houston vs Troy Picks and Prediction

Pick: Sam Houston +16.5

I'm taking Sam Houston +16.5 if that number is available. Troy deserves to be favored, gets the home-field advantage and returns enough experience to have the better chance of controlling this game, but more than two touchdowns is considerable protection in an FBS-versus-FBS matchup. Sam Houston doesn't need to threaten an upset. The Bearkats simply need enough offense to keep Troy from creating three-score separation. Something around Troy 31, Sam Houston 20 gives the Trojans a comfortable 11-point victory while cashing the underdog by 5.5 points. Shopping matters here because +16.5 is substantially more attractive than +15. Take Sam Houston +16.5.

Pick: Under 53.5

I'll also take Under 53.5. The best route for Sam Houston to remain inside the spread is to limit possessions, avoid turnovers and prevent Troy from generating easy points through short fields. Troy can control the game without this developing into a shootout, and a 31-20 final produces only 51 combined points. A 31-17 or 34-17 result provides even more room beneath the total. Troy's defense has enough returning pass-rush ability to make sustained Sam Houston scoring difficult, while the Bearkats covering doesn't require the visitors to reach the upper 20s. Take Under 53.5.

Final Picks: Sam Houston +16.5 and Under 53.5
