Aztecs Looking to Build Momentum
The San Diego State Aztecs have gotten off to a good start to open the season as they are 2-1 after their 34-0 home victory against the California Golden Bears last time out. The offense has been holding its own as they are 76th with 29.7 points per game. Quarterback Jayden Denegal has completed 43-of-73 (58.9%) of his passes for 529 yards with three touchdown passes and zero interceptions while also rushing 19 times for -4 yards (-0.2 yards per carry) and a rushing touchdown. Running back Lucky Sutton has been helping take some pressure off the passing game as he has 50 carries for 249 yards (5.0 yards per attempt) as well as one reception for four yards (4.0 yards per catch).
San Diego State’s defense is clicking on all cylinders as they are giving up 12.0 points per game, which is 17th in the country. The defense has been applying a solid amount of pressure as they have seven sacks, 17 pass deflections, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery this season.

Huskies Looking to Correct Course
The Northern Illinois Huskies are looking to recover after losing last week to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road, 38-10. The offense is terrible as they are averaging only 12.7 points per game up to this point. Quarterback Josh Holst is completing 65-of-115 (63.5%) of his passes for 327 yards with one passing touchdown and two interceptions. The team has a strong running game as Chavonn Wright has 51 attempts for 214 yards (4.2 yards per carry) with one rushing touchdown and five catches for 14 yards as well. Telly Johnson Jr. adds 199 yards rushing with a 5.4 yards per carry average.
The defense has struggled a bit as they are giving up 25.0 points per game so far this season. The defense recorded only four sacks, one interception, zero forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. If the offense can improve dramatically, the Huskies are in a spot where they can be feared.

San Diego State Aztecs vs. Northern Illinois Huskies Pick
Spread Pick for San Diego State vs. Northern Illinois
- San Diego State Aztecs -125 (5 units)
I’m going to take the better team and they are only a slight favorite heading into this game. Looking at the injury report, there are a few offensive linemen for Northern Illinois who are questionable for the game, and they are already struggling to move the ball when healthy. Jayden Denegal should control the passing game and there is a reason why the Aztecs are 6-0 against the Huskies all-time. The stats are backing it up as well so go with the Aztecs to cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for San Diego State vs. Northern Illinois
- Under 43.5 (4 units)
The total bet is a bit more difficult than choosing a winner because Northern Illinois has failed to reach 20 points in a game this season. They are not getting in a position to force takeaways so San Diego State can move the ball without worrying too much about turning the football over. With longer drives, fewer opportunities to score will arise and that is a situation I see happening here. The Huskies only allowed 20 points against Maryland and 17 to Holy Cross, so they have a bend but don’t break ability on that side of the ball. All in all, under 43.5 is the way to go here.
