Redshirt sophomore quarterback Arch Manning struggled as he completed 17-of-30 passes for 170 yards with a passing touchdown and an interception. He also ran the football 10 times for 38 yards (3.8 yards per carry) but could not find the end zone.

Spartans Looking to be on the Attack

The San Jose State Spartans wound up losing the opening game of the season 16-14 at home against the Central Michigan Chippewas last week. The offense was able to move the football as they were 8-for-16 on third downs, but struggled as they committed three turnovers (one fumble recovery, two interceptions).

The defense stepped up as they gave up 16 points on 362 total yards (115 passing, 247 rushing) in the game. The defense struggled to slow things down as Central Michigan averaged 8.8 yards per pass attempt and 4.9 yards per rush attempt. It was a major reason why the Chippewas maintained possession for 33:45.

San Jose State has been struggling as they are tied for 105th in college football with 14.0 points per game. Their defense is stepping up early on as their 16.0 points per game allowed ranks tied for 66th in the nation.

Longhorns Looking to Shake Off Slow Opener

The Texas Longhorns are looking to recover from their last game as they lost on the road against the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes 14-7 last time out. The offense could not manage to get much going as the team was 5-for-14 on third downs and 1-for-5 on fourth down attempts.

The defense looked outstanding as they held Ohio State to 14 points on 203 total yards of offense (126 passing, 77 rushing). The team was able to get stops on the money downs as the Buckeyes were 3-for-12 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth. However, the team failed to record a single sack.

The Texas Longhorns have been unable to score points consistently as they are tied for 126th in the nation with 7.0 points per game. Their defense has been solid as they are giving up 14.0 points per game, which is tied for 58th in college football.

San Jose State vs. Texas

Spread pick for San Jose State vs. Texas

  • Texas Longhorns -36.5 (4 units)

The defense for Texas exuded a lot of confidence against one of the best teams in the country in Week 1. The offense is going to be a lot sharper against a Group of Five defense rather than Ohio State. San Jose State struggled on special teams as they missed their two field goal attempts. Texas’ defense should be able to limit what San Jose State’s offense can do, especially with the crowd at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium bringing the energy. Arch Manning should be able to bounce back with a dominant performance as the Longhorns cover the massive spread.

Over/Under Pick for San Jose State vs. Texas

  • OVER 52.5 (5 units)

The Texas Longhorns are going to view this as a get-right game and should be able to score 40+ points on their own. San Jose State still can get the ball out and move down the field to score points, even on a tough Texas defense. The weather is not expecting much rain or wind, meaning there should not be issues with kicking like the Spartans had in the opening game. Expect Walker Eget to be a factor under center and find the end zone at least one time in this game. All in all, go with OVER 52.5 POINTS in this game as the better bet.
