SMU is heavy in the mix

The ACC race is getting extremely heated, and the Mustangs are smack dab in the middle of it at 4-1 SU in conference play. They are 4-1 SU over their last five games and rebounded from their long conference loss to take down No. 10 Miami in overtime.

After scoring over 30 points in three straight games, the SMU offense averaged 19 points over their last two games. The team is averaging 30.8 points, ninth in the ACC, and 388 total yards per game, 10th in the conference. Their main source of yardage is through the air, where their 277 yards per game is the fifth-best average in the conference. Kevin Jennings threw for a season-high 365 yards in the team’s win over Miami. The junior QB has 2,484 passing yards this season, second in the ACC and seventh overall. He has 18 TDs, 8 INTs and has been sacked 15 times. The team is averaging 111 yards per game on the ground, with T.J. Harden’s 483 yards and 6 TDs leading the club.

The SMU defense is yielding 21.2 points per game this season, the fourth-best mark in the ACC. Opponents average 402.8 total yards against them each week, which drops them to 13th in the conference. They have the worst passing defense in the ACC, allowing 300.2 yards per game while also giving up 102.6 rushing yards each time out. They do lead the conference with 14 interceptions and 25 sacks. Ahmaad Moses is second on the team with 69 tackles and is tied for the ACC lead with 5 interceptions. Trey Webb has a team-high 5.5 sacks.

Boston College far from win column

The Eagles are desperate to taste victory, having lost eight straight games, forcing them to 0-5 SU in the ACC. They play their next two games at home, including a matchup against No. 17 Georgia Tech next weekend, before concluding the regular season at Syracuse after Thanksgiving.

Boston College scored 10 points last week, the third time in their last five games that they scored 10 points or less. They average 24.9 points per game, 11th in the ACC, and their 361 total yards rank 13th in the conference. Their passing attack is seventh-best in the conference, averaging 268.9 yards per game. Grayson James has been decent since taking over under center three weeks back. The senior QB averaged 229.3 yards and had a combined 6 TDs in the last three games, but also completed only 57.7% of his passes and had 2 INTs. B.C. has the third-worst running game in the ACC, averaging just 92.1 yards per game. Turbo Richard leads the team with 457 rushing yards, but had only 26 on 16 carries last week.

On defense, the Eagles are giving up 33.3 points per game, the worst mark in the conference and tied for 13th worst in the country. They are allowing 415.9 total yards per game, the fourth-worst mark in the ACC. B.C. is allowing 253.3 passing yards and 162.6 rushing yards per game. SMU vs. Boston College Picks

Spread Pick for SMU vs. BC

  • SMU -10.5 (5 units)

In their first meeting as conference foes last season, the Mustangs walked away with a 10-point victory at home as -19 favorites. The Mustangs need to make sure they aren’t looking ahead to their next game versus No. 15 Louisville in three weeks. Having a week between games should help, as should playing at the Heights, where ACC teams are averaging 34.5 points per game this season. SMU’s defense is going to lull the Eagles into thinking they can move the ball through the air before they start forcing them to make mistakes. The Mustangs put tons of pressure in the backfield and B.C. doesn’t have a run game to counter it. SMU’s four conference victories have come by an average of 13.5 points per game. The last five losses for Boston College were by at least 14 points.

Take the Mustangs, giving the points.

Over/Under Pick for SMU vs. BC

  • Over 54 (5 units)

In last season’s meeting, the two teams combined for 66 points, hitting over against a 55-point total. These two teams sit in the middle of the ACC pack in terms of scoring offense, each averaging over 24 points per game. Boston College has been able to score 23 points or more in two of their last three games and the SMU defense should allow them to get in position to score a few times here. The Eagles have also given up 38 points or more in four of their last five efforts. The SMU offense has been slowed in their last two games, but this is the perfect place for them to open things back up. They have scored 31 points or more in three of their five ACC matchups.

Take the over.
