No. 19 SMU travels to Tallahassee for a Labor Day night ACC matchup against Florida State on Monday, September 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET at Doak Campbell Stadium, with ESPN providing national television coverage. SMU will be making its 2026 debut, while Florida State enters at 1-0 after opening its season with a 34-17 victory over New Mexico State. The Mustangs are currently favored by three points, with Florida State getting +3 at home. The total is set at 53.5, while SMU is -162 on the moneyline and Florida State is +136. SMU Opens With an Immediate ACC Test

SMU doesn't get a tune-up game before beginning conference play. The Mustangs go directly into Doak Campbell Stadium for one of the more interesting games of opening weekend. The market remains bullish on SMU despite the difficult location. The Mustangs opened around -2.5 and have moved to -3, with their moneyline climbing from approximately -155 to -162. That deserves attention.

SMU finished last season strongly, winning four of its final five games. That stretch included victories of 24-19, 38-6, 45-13 and 26-20 in overtime, with the lone defeat coming 38-35 on the road. The Mustangs also enter 2026 with considerable continuity after going 6-2 in ACC play last season. That experience matters when opening a season with a road conference game rather than a conventional nonconference matchup.

The primary concern is that SMU hasn't played yet. Florida State has already gone through a complete game, giving the Seminoles an opportunity to identify and correct problems before facing the Mustangs.

Florida State Already Has a Win

Florida State has one significant situational advantage: the Seminoles already have a game under their belt. They opened the season Saturday with a 34-17 victory over New Mexico State. Florida State generated enough offensive production to establish control while limiting its opponent to 17 points. That gives the Seminoles some tangible momentum entering Labor Day.

Florida State also gets this game at Doak Campbell Stadium. Asking SMU to go on the road and cover a field goal against a team that has already played is substantially different from backing the Mustangs at home.

The market recognizes how close this matchup could be. ESPN Analytics gives SMU only a 51.5% probability of winning compared with 48.5% for Florida State. That's essentially a coin flip. Florida State also has something to prove after struggling through portions of the 2025 season. The Seminoles finished last year by losing three of their final four games, but their 34-17 victory in the 2026 opener provides at least an early indication that this year's team could be different.

SMU vs Florida State Picks and Prediction

Pick: Florida State +3

I'm taking Florida State +3. SMU may ultimately prove to be the better team, but I'm not eager to lay a full field goal on the road when ESPN Analytics views the matchup as virtually even. Florida State already has a game under its belt, won that contest 34-17 and now gets to play at Doak Campbell Stadium. The movement from SMU -2.5 to -3 actually makes the Seminoles more attractive because we're now getting the key number. I wouldn't be surprised if this game is decided by a field goal either way. Something around Florida State 27, SMU 24 fits my handicap. Take Florida State +3.

Pick: Under 53.5

I'm also taking Under 53.5. Florida State's best route to winning involves preventing SMU from controlling the pace and turning the game into a high-scoring affair. The Seminoles allowed only 17 points in their opener, while SMU is playing its first game of the season and could experience some early offensive inconsistency on the road. A competitive game in the mid-20s fits both the spread and the situational setup. Something like 27-24 or 26-24 stays beneath the current number. Take Under 53.5.

Final Picks: Florida State +3 and Under 53.5
