SMU vs Louisville Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026
The SMU Mustangs travel to L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, to face the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET in an important early ACC matchup. SMU opened conference play by earning a 27-24 road victory at Florida State and entered Week 2 ranked No. 17, while No. 24 Louisville responded to its opening loss by destroying Villanova 59-13. Louisville is currently around a 2-point favorite with the total at 57.5. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.
SMU Has Already Proven It Can Win an ACC Road Game
SMU's 27-24 victory at Florida State immediately gave the Mustangs a valuable conference road win. SMU generated 430 passing yards in Tallahassee and overcame two interceptions, eventually producing the winning field goal with only 21 seconds remaining. Winning a game like that matters because the Mustangs now enter Louisville already knowing they can execute in a difficult road environment.
The Florida State performance also demonstrated SMU's offensive ceiling. The Mustangs were able to create explosive plays through the passing game and continued attacking despite early mistakes. That willingness to remain aggressive should matter against Louisville because the Cardinals just demonstrated that they can generate points extremely quickly when their offense establishes rhythm.
SMU's concern is preventing this from becoming a game where Louisville controls the line of scrimmage and repeatedly creates explosive plays. The Mustangs should have enough offense to respond, but another multi-turnover performance would be much more dangerous against a Louisville team coming off a 59-point effort. Ball security could ultimately decide a matchup where there doesn't appear to be much separation between the teams.
Louisville's Offense Exploded in Its Home Opener
Louisville couldn't have asked for a much stronger response after its season-opening defeat. The Cardinals demolished Villanova 59-13 and generated 635 total yards, their highest offensive output since September 2023. Louisville scored at least 14 points in every quarter and continued creating explosive plays throughout the game.
The Cardinals were particularly dangerous because they didn't rely on one method of attack. Louisville produced multiple long passing touchdowns while also generating consistent rushing production. That balance creates problems for SMU because selling out to prevent explosive passes can open additional running opportunities. Louisville also gets the benefit of playing its second consecutive game at home.
Villanova obviously isn't SMU, so the 59-point performance needs to be placed in context. SMU already demonstrated its ability to win at Florida State and represents a substantial increase in competition. Louisville deserves a slight home-field edge, but the matchup looks much closer to a one-possession game than something the Cardinals should dominate.
SMU vs Louisville Picks and Prediction
Pick: SMU +2
Take SMU +2. Louisville's offensive explosion against Villanova was impressive, but SMU has already produced the more meaningful result by winning 27-24 at Florida State. The Mustangs have demonstrated that they can generate explosive offense in a hostile ACC environment, and getting points in what appears to be a relatively even matchup provides additional value. I would also consider SMU on the moneyline.
Pick: Over 57.5
Take the Over 57.5. Louisville just produced 635 yards and 59 points, while SMU generated 430 passing yards in its victory at Florida State. Both offenses have demonstrated significant explosive potential, and neither side should be interested in playing overly conservatively once the opponent starts scoring. A projected SMU 31, Louisville 30 makes the underdog and Over my preferred combination.
Final Picks: SMU +2 and Over 57.5
