South Alabama Has Shown Plenty of Offensive Upside

South Alabama enters at 2-1 after beating Southeastern Louisiana 39-14, losing a competitive 28-24 game at Tulane and then defeating Ohio 41-36. The Jaguars have therefore scored at least 24 points in every game and have reached 39 or more twice.

The four-point loss at Tulane is particularly useful when evaluating South Alabama’s ability to travel. The Jaguars did not win, but they remained competitive against a quality opponent away from Mobile. Kentucky represents a much greater physical challenge, but South Alabama has at least demonstrated that it won’t automatically disappear on the road.

Defense is the larger concern. Allowing Ohio to score 36 before traveling to an SEC stadium is not ideal. South Alabama needs to prevent Kentucky from establishing the run and creating a game where the Wildcats can repeatedly operate from favorable down-and-distance situations.

The Wildcats now face a completely different challenge. Rather than preparing for a ranked SEC opponent, Kentucky has to avoid a letdown against a South Alabama team capable of scoring. The Jaguars’ 41-point performance against Ohio should ensure Kentucky’s defense takes the matchup seriously.

Kentucky has the substantial advantage in size and depth, particularly if it can control the line of scrimmage. South Alabama’s offense is dangerous enough to punish mistakes, but the Jaguars may struggle if Kentucky consistently forces long-yardage situations and makes them one-dimensional.
