Stanford loses to Pitt amidst several turnovers

The Stanford Cardinal are 3-6 overall and 2-4 in ACC play heading into Week 11, putting them at 13th in the ACC standings–one spot ahead of their upcoming opponent. They're coming off their first home loss of the season against Pittsburgh, and they'll be making their fourth road trip to play an ACC opponent this season after losing their first three road conference games by a combined score of 124-37.

Stanford became the latest victim of the surging Pittsburgh Panthers last week, losing 35-20 despite their opponent committing four turnovers and losing 93 yards on ten penalties. The Panthers outgained the Cardinal by 140 yards, converted seven more first downs, and outscored them 28-3 through the second and third quarters. Ben Gulbranson completed 17 of 30 passes for 228 yards, ending three Stanford drives with interceptions before the team turned to Elijah Brown under center later in the game. Brown completed 10 of 14 passes for 108 yards, matching Gulbranson's one-touchdown performance while barely edging him in yards per attempt. C.J. Williams led the receiving corps with 122 yards and two touchdowns–one from each quarterback–on seven catches.

The Cardinal offense is 75th in passing yards (225.7), 133rd in rushing yards (81.4), and 127th in points per game (17.8). They're not a great operation, but they'll hope to look better on Saturday against one of the few ACC teams still behind them in the conference standings.

North Carolina secures first ACC win against Syracuse

The North Carolina Tar Heels are 3-5 overall and 1-3 against ACC opponents this season, but they're coming off a 27-10 win at Syracuse last week to secure that lone win. They'll look to carry that momentum forward into a home game this weekend against a Stanford team that's struggled mightily on the road this season.

UNC looked like a vastly improved team against Syracuse a week ago. They racked up 426 yards on offense while allowing only 152 on defense. They scored 21 unanswered points in the second half, and they held Orange quarterback Joseph Filardi to four completions for 39 yards on 18 pass attempts. Gio Lopez completed 15 of 19 passes for 216 yards for the Tar Heels, throwing two touchdowns without an interception or sack while averaging 11.4 yards per attempt. The defense got after the Orange offense, sacking Filardi four times and defending three passes.

Saturday's game against Stanford will shed some light on whether the Tar Heels are truly better or if they merely capitalized on facing an overmatched opponent. The Orange are months removed from losing starting quarterback Steve Angeli to an Achilles injury in their upset win over Clemson. They've lost five straight games by multiple scores since he left the lineup, and they're now one of three teams behind Stanford and UNC in the ACC standings. The Tar Heels had lost narrowly to California (21-18) and No. 16 Virginia (17-16), in the weeks before facing Syracuse, but they hadn't won since beating FCS Richmond 41-6 early in the season.

Stanford vs. North Carolina Team Pick

Spread Pick for Stanford vs. UNC

  • Stanford +7.5 (-115) (4 Units)

On one hand, Stanford is 0-3 in road games against ACC opponents with a grisly point differential (124-37). On the other hand, they played those games at Virginia (8-1), SMU (6-3), and Miami (6-2)–three of the best teams in the conference, all of which have made recurring appearances on the AP Top 25 this season. I wouldn't anoint North Carolina based on a second-half win against a floundering Syracuse team; they could still beat Stanford at home, but I don't see them as a 7.5-point favorite.

Over/Under Pick for Stanford vs. North Carolina

  • Under 42.5 (-110) (4 Units)

The Team Total Under is 6-2 in North Carolina games this season and 3-0 in their last three outings. Their defense has rounded into form down the stretch, and they've only allowed 48 points over their last three games–averaging 16 points per game. I don't believe the Stanford offense is going to break that trend, especially after scoring 20 or fewer points in each of their last four games.
