Still, the Cardinal now face a Blue Devils team that just demonstrated it can generate sustained offense against a Big Ten opponent. Stanford needs much better defensive execution to prevent Duke from controlling the matchup.

Duke Returns Home After a Statement Road Victory

Duke improved to 2-0 with an impressive 31-27 victory at Illinois. The Blue Devils didn't steal the game through a series of fluky plays; they generated 376 total yards, scored on all four of their red-zone opportunities and produced 170 yards on the ground. Duke also overcame 11 penalties for 112 yards, suggesting the performance still contained plenty of room for improvement.

The most encouraging aspect was Duke's ability to finish. Illinois led 24-14 late in the second quarter, but the Blue Devils scored before halftime and then took the lead in the third quarter. Duke's defense prevented Illinois from scoring a touchdown after halftime and eventually closed out the game on the road. That's valuable evidence for a team now expected to handle a weaker opponent at home.

Stanford's cross-country travel creates another situational advantage. Duke has already demonstrated it can win a physical game against quality opposition, while Stanford's only test against a ranked opponent ended in a 39-point defeat. The Blue Devils shouldn't assume this will be easy, especially with Stanford having an extra week to prepare, but the underlying matchup strongly favors Duke.
