Syracuse vs Pittsburgh Picks and Prediction for Thursday September 17 2026
The Syracuse Orange travel to face the Pittsburgh Panthers at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET with national coverage on ESPN. Syracuse enters the matchup at 1-1 overall and 0-1 in ACC play after suffering a 21-18 loss to California, while Pittsburgh is 2-0 after opening with a 59-14 win over Miami (Ohio) and following it with a 12-7 victory over UCF. Pittsburgh is currently listed as a 10.5-point favorite with the total at 59.5. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.
Syracuse Looks to Clean Up the Mistakes
Syracuse's 1-1 record doesn't completely describe how competitive the Orange were against California. Syracuse generated 436 yards of total offense compared with only 247 for the Golden Bears, yet still lost 21-18. That is the kind of defeat that can usually be traced to self-inflicted mistakes rather than simply being outplayed.
The biggest problems were turnovers and penalties. Quarterback Steve Angeli threw three interceptions, including a fourth-quarter pick-six that turned an 18-14 Syracuse advantage into a 21-18 deficit. Syracuse was also penalized 15 times for 134 yards and failed to consistently finish scoring opportunities. Those mistakes erased much of the advantage created by an offense that was able to move the football.
The concern becomes even greater with Syracuse going on the road for the first time this season and doing so on a short week. The Orange played Saturday afternoon and now must prepare for a Thursday night rivalry game at Acrisure Stadium. Syracuse has enough offensive capability to challenge Pittsburgh, but another game featuring three turnovers and triple-digit penalty yardage would make covering a double-digit spread extremely difficult.
Pittsburgh's Defense Gives the Panthers an Edge
Pittsburgh enters Thursday at 2-0 after showing two very different ways it can win. The Panthers exploded offensively in their opener, beating Miami (Ohio) 59-14 behind 453 passing yards and seven touchdown passes from Mason Heintschel. One week later, the offense managed only 12 points against UCF, but Pittsburgh's defense carried the Panthers to a 12-7 victory.
That defensive performance deserves attention entering this matchup. Pittsburgh limited UCF to only 206 total yards, including just 20 rushing yards. The Panthers allowed nine first downs, forced UCF to go 4-for-13 on third down and stopped all three fourth-down attempts. Pittsburgh also controlled possession for 36:12 while running 72 offensive plays compared with 53 for UCF.
The offensive performance against UCF was considerably less impressive. Pittsburgh produced 315 total yards and went only 5-for-18 on third down. Heintschel completed 18 of 29 passes for 212 yards after his spectacular season opener, while freshman Damon Ferguson Jr. supplied 59 rushing yards and Pittsburgh's lone offensive touchdown. Still, the ability to win when the offense wasn't operating at its best is encouraging. Pittsburgh now gets another home game against a Syracuse offense coming off three interceptions and numerous drive-killing mistakes.
Syracuse vs Pittsburgh Picks and Prediction
Pick: Pittsburgh -10.5
Take Pittsburgh -10.5. There is some danger laying double digits with a Panthers team that scored only 12 points last week, but the matchup is favorable. Pittsburgh has already demonstrated a much higher offensive ceiling, and its defense just held UCF to 206 yards. Syracuse moved the football effectively against Cal but undermined itself with 15 penalties, three interceptions and missed scoring opportunities. Now the Orange must make their first road trip of the season on a short week. Pittsburgh has won its first two games at Acrisure Stadium and has won the last two meetings with Syracuse. At -10.5, the Panthers are the preferred side, although I would become considerably less interested if this number moves through -11.5 toward two touchdowns.
Pick: Under 59.5
The Under 59.5 is my preferred total. Pittsburgh's 59-point opener makes the Panthers' offense look explosive on paper, but their second game was much more revealing against stronger competition. They produced 315 yards and only 12 points against UCF, while their defense surrendered just seven. Syracuse's defense allowed only 247 total yards to Cal despite the 21-18 defeat, with seven of Cal's points coming directly from an interception return. With Pittsburgh capable of controlling this game defensively and Syracuse potentially emphasizing ball security after last week's turnover problems, 59.5 provides enough room to back the Under. A Pittsburgh victory somewhere in the neighborhood of 31-17 would cover the spread while remaining comfortably below the total.
Final Picks: Pittsburgh -10.5 and Under 59.5
