Tennessee State travels to Athens to face No. 3 Georgia at Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM ET, with SEC Network+ providing coverage. Tennessee State enters at 0-1, while this will be Georgia's first game of the 2026 season. The Bulldogs are overwhelming favorites, with DraftKings currently listing Georgia -46.5 and Tennessee State +46.5. The total is set at 56.5 points. ESPN Analytics gives Georgia a 99% probability of winning the game. Get into the action with our free college football picks.

This is not really a question of which team should win. Georgia has one of the most talented rosters in college football, enters the season ranked third nationally and gets an FCS opponent at Sanford Stadium. The betting decision instead comes down to whether the Bulldogs can create enough separation to cover a spread approaching seven touchdowns. Georgia could dominate the game from beginning to end and still fail to cover +46.5 for Tennessee State.

Tennessee State Gets Nearly Seven Touchdowns

Tennessee State enters Athens already having played its first game of the season, while Georgia will be making its 2026 debut. The Tigers are facing an enormous jump in competition and will be significantly overmatched from a talent and depth perspective. There isn't much reason to believe Tennessee State can threaten an outright upset when the betting market isn't even offering a conventional moneyline and ESPN Analytics gives the Tigers only a 1% chance of winning.

The handicap becomes much different when Tennessee State is given 46.5 points. The Tigers do not need to remain legitimately competitive for four quarters. They simply need to avoid losing by 47 or more. A 42-0 Georgia victory would still cash Tennessee State +46.5. So would 49-7, 45-3, 48-7 or 52-7. That gives the massive underdog considerably more margin for error than the mismatch itself might initially suggest.

Tennessee State's offensive production could ultimately determine whether the Tigers cover. One touchdown may not sound significant in a game where Georgia is expected to dominate, but seven points dramatically change the number Georgia needs. If Tennessee State reaches seven points, the Bulldogs suddenly need at least 54 to cover -46.5. If the Tigers somehow reach 10, Georgia would need 57. That becomes increasingly difficult if the Bulldogs build a huge early lead and shift their priority from scoring to finishing the opener healthy.

Georgia Should Control the Game From the Beginning

Georgia enters 2026 ranked No. 3 nationally and will open its season in front of more than 90,000 fans at Sanford Stadium. There should be very little doubt regarding which team controls the line of scrimmage. Georgia has overwhelming advantages in size, speed, depth and overall roster talent, and this matchup provides the Bulldogs an opportunity to work through their opening-game execution before the schedule becomes more demanding.

The Bulldogs should be capable of controlling field position and creating short scoring opportunities. That's important when evaluating the total because Georgia may not need long, sustained drives to produce points. A dominant defense and special teams can repeatedly provide favorable starting position against an overmatched opponent. If Georgia reaches the 30s relatively early, both the enormous spread and the 56.5-point total become much more interesting.

The problem with laying -46.5 is what happens once Georgia establishes complete control. The Bulldogs have no betting-related incentive to keep their primary rotation on the field simply to turn a 42-point advantage into a 50-point advantage. Georgia's depth is obviously good enough to continue scoring, but substitutions, a more conservative approach and a running clock can all work against a favorite laying nearly seven touchdowns. Georgia can accomplish everything it wants from this opener while still failing to cover.

The Spread Is More Difficult Than Picking the Winner

There is a major distinction between predicting Georgia to dominate and predicting Georgia to cover 46.5 points. ESPN Analytics gives the Bulldogs a 99% win probability, so the outright outcome is barely in question. The betting market has already accounted for the talent difference by requiring Georgia to win by at least 47 points.

That creates an unusual handicap. A hypothetical Georgia 49-7 victory would be an overwhelming performance. The Bulldogs would win by six touchdowns and allow only one score, yet Tennessee State +46.5 would still cover by 4.5 points. Even 52-7 would leave the Tigers inside the number.

For Georgia backers, the preferred scenario requires almost complete domination combined with continued scoring after the game has effectively been decided. Georgia could certainly do that, particularly because of its depth. But when the spread reaches this level, I'm more interested in how many different ways the underdog can cover than whether the underdog has any realistic chance of winning.

Tennessee State vs Georgia Picks and Prediction

Pick: Tennessee State +46.5

I'm taking Tennessee State +46.5. Georgia should dominate this game, and I would be stunned if the Bulldogs were seriously threatened. That's already built into the number. The question is whether Georgia needs to win by 47-plus points, and that's a considerably different proposition. Tennessee State only needs one or two productive possessions to force the Bulldogs toward the mid-50s before -46.5 becomes comfortable. There is also the possibility that Georgia establishes a massive halftime advantage before using the second half to develop depth and get through its season opener without unnecessary risk. Tennessee State +46.5 is the side pick, with something around Georgia 49-7 providing a perfectly reasonable path to an underdog cover.

Pick: Over 56.5

I'll stay with the Over 56.5, although this is the weaker of my two selections. Georgia is capable of doing most of the work itself. If the Bulldogs score 49, Tennessee State needs only eight points to send the game Over. A 52-7 result also gets there. The danger is a completely one-sided game in which Georgia shuts out Tennessee State and becomes conservative after building a 35- or 42-point lead. Still, the Bulldogs' overwhelming talent and potential for favorable field position create enough scoring upside for me to lean toward the Over. Over 56.5 is the total pick, but I would not want to chase this much higher if the market moves.

Final Picks: Tennessee State +46.5 and Over 56.5
