Faizon Brandon was excellent in his first start, completing 13 of 17 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Brandon was equally dangerous as a runner, producing 68 rushing yards and two more touchdowns.

DeSean Bishop rushed 14 times for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Mike Matthews provided the explosive plays outside with four catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Tennessee's ability to generate big plays both through the air and on the ground immediately makes the Volunteers a difficult matchup for Georgia Tech.

The competition obviously becomes much stronger in Atlanta. Tennessee won't enjoy the same physical advantage it had against Furman, but Brandon's debut suggests the Volunteers remain capable of putting significant pressure on opposing defenses.

Georgia Tech Suffers Heartbreaking Opener

Georgia Tech came within seconds of starting its season with a victory but suffered a brutal 14-13 loss to Colorado. The Yellow Jackets led 13-7 with less than two minutes remaining before Colorado scored with 37 seconds left. Georgia Tech then drove into field-goal range, only to have a 45-yard attempt blocked as time expired.

Alberto Mendoza was impressive in his first collegiate start, completing 17 of 23 passes for 237 yards without an interception. Jordan Allen caught eight passes for 113 yards, while Dalen Penson added three receptions for 73 yards.

The major concern was the running game. Georgia Tech finished with only 51 rushing yards, its lowest total since 2022. Justice Haynes accounted for 64 yards on 19 carries, but the rest of the rushing production dragged the overall number backward.

Georgia Tech also committed nine penalties and struggled to consistently get off the field defensively. The Yellow Jackets showed enough defensively to make Colorado work for its points, but Tennessee brings substantially more offensive speed and explosiveness into Atlanta.

Tennessee -13.5 is my preferred side. Georgia Tech deserves credit for nearly beating Colorado, but the Yellow Jackets generated only 51 rushing yards and now face a Tennessee team capable of scoring quickly from almost anywhere on the field. Brandon's combination of passing efficiency and mobility gives Georgia Tech considerably more to defend, while Tennessee's skill-position speed creates major problems if the Yellow Jackets can't consistently generate pressure. Keeping this below two touchdowns is important. Take Tennessee -13.5.

Pick: Over 55.5

The Over 55.5 is my preferred total. Tennessee produced 56 points in its opener and has multiple paths to explosive plays. Georgia Tech should also have more offensive success than the 13-point result against Colorado suggests, especially after Mendoza completed nearly 74 percent of his attempts for 237 yards. Tennessee can threaten the 40-point mark, leaving Georgia Tech needing something in the high teens or low 20s to push this game Over. Take Over 55.5.
