Texas Southern Comes Back to Earth
Texas Southern opened the season impressively with a 42-30 victory over North Carolina Central, but the Tigers couldn't carry that momentum into the Labor Day Classic. Prairie View A&M dominated Texas Southern 52-14, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.
Cam'Ron McCoy struggled to generate much through the air against Prairie View, completing 10 of 19 passes for 81 yards. He did provide one of Texas Southern's touchdowns with a 17-yard run during the second quarter. Ri'Jon Hammond added the Tigers' other touchdown on an eight-yard run with only five seconds remaining.
The final score was particularly concerning because Prairie View broke the game open after halftime. Texas Southern trailed 17-7 at the break before allowing 35 second-half points. Prairie View scored three touchdowns during a six-minute stretch of the third quarter and eventually built a 52-7 advantage.
Texas Southern now has a short turnaround before traveling to El Paso. The Tigers played Sunday against Prairie View and will have only six days before facing UTEP on Saturday night. That's not ideal for a team coming off a physically and emotionally demanding rivalry game.
UTEP Gets a Major Reduction in Competition
UTEP's 2026 season began with about as difficult an assignment as possible. The Miners traveled to Norman to face No. 10 Oklahoma and were overwhelmed 51-0.
UTEP finished with 198 total yards, including 112 on the ground and 86 through the air. The Miners averaged only 3.5 yards per play and converted just two of 13 third downs. Oklahoma's defense consistently prevented UTEP from sustaining possessions or generating explosive plays.
That performance looks ugly on paper, but the opponent matters considerably. Oklahoma entered the season with College Football Playoff expectations and was favored by more than 40 points. Texas Southern represents a dramatic reduction in competition for UTEP's home opener.
The Miners should have a much better opportunity to establish their running game and avoid obvious passing situations. UTEP also gets an extra day of preparation after playing Oklahoma on Friday, while Texas Southern is coming off its Sunday rivalry game.
This becomes an important measuring-stick game for UTEP. The Miners aren't expected to compete with Oklahoma, but they should be capable of controlling an FCS opponent at home if they're going to make progress this season.
Texas Southern vs UTEP Picks and Prediction
Pick: UTEP -10.5 or Better
With no dependable conventional sportsbook spread available yet, UTEP -10.5 or better is my target. I'm not going to overreact to the Miners getting shut out by Oklahoma because Texas Southern presents an entirely different level of competition. The Tigers just allowed 52 points to Prairie View and now travel to El Paso on a short week. UTEP should have considerably more success running the football and sustaining possessions than it did in Norman. If sportsbooks keep this around 10 points, I'll back the FBS home team. Take UTEP -10.5 or better.
Pick: Under 52.5
The Under 52.5 is my preferred total target. Texas Southern scored 42 in its opener but managed only 14 against Prairie View, with its second touchdown coming in the final seconds of a blowout. UTEP, meanwhile, still has to prove its offense can consistently finish drives after producing 198 yards and no points against Oklahoma. UTEP should control this matchup, but I'm more comfortable projecting something around 31-14 or 34-14 than expecting an offensive shootout. Take the Under if the total is set at 52.5 or higher.
Final Picks: UTEP -10.5 or better and Under 52.5 or higher
