Texas Tech Defense Leads the Way in Opener

Texas Tech didn't produce the overwhelming blowout many expected against Abilene Christian, but the Red Raiders still opened their season with a comfortable 33-10 victory. The defense was especially impressive, keeping the Wildcats out of the end zone offensively.

Will Hammond made a successful return after the knee injury that ended his 2025 season. Hammond completed 26 of 33 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown, although he did throw one interception. His accuracy helped Texas Tech consistently move the chains even when the Red Raiders weren't generating explosive scoring plays.

J'Koby Williams provided balance out of the backfield, rushing 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown while adding eight receptions for 57 yards. Kenny Johnson caught four passes for 76 yards, giving Hammond another productive option in the passing game.

Texas Tech will want a cleaner offensive performance in Corvallis, but there was plenty to like about the opener. Hammond looked comfortable, the Red Raiders had multiple offensive contributors, and the defense made it extremely difficult for Abilene Christian to finish possessions.

Oregon State Passing Game Provides Some Hope

Oregon State opened with a challenging road trip to No. 23 Houston and suffered a 33-20 defeat. The final margin was 13 points, but the Beavers demonstrated enough offensive ability to make this matchup interesting if Texas Tech doesn't play efficiently.

Baylor Atkinson completed 29 of 48 passes for 376 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Oregon State's ability to generate 376 passing yards against a ranked Houston defense was easily the most encouraging aspect of the opener.

True freshman Jesse Legree also made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut, providing another weapon in an Oregon State passing attack that was forced to carry most of the offensive workload.

The problem was balance. Houston held Oregon State to only 26 rushing yards, forcing Atkinson into 48 passing attempts. That kind of one-dimensional approach becomes dangerous against a Texas Tech defense with enough speed to generate pressure and create negative plays.

Oregon State does gain the benefit of returning to Reser Stadium for its home opener. The Beavers need to establish some semblance of a running game because asking Atkinson to throw 45-plus times again isn't an ideal formula against the No. 12 team in the country.

Pick: Oregon State +27.5

Oregon State +27.5 is my preferred side. Texas Tech is clearly the stronger team, but nearly four touchdowns is a significant number for a road favorite facing an Oregon State offense that just threw for 376 yards against Houston. The Red Raiders also failed to cover an enormous number against Abilene Christian, winning by 23 rather than completely overwhelming the Wildcats. Oregon State doesn't need to seriously threaten the upset to cash this ticket; the Beavers simply need enough passing production to avoid getting buried. At more than four possessions, take Oregon State +27.5.

Pick: Under 51.5

The Under 51.5 is my preferred total. Texas Tech's defense prevented Abilene Christian from scoring an offensive touchdown, while Oregon State managed 20 points at Houston despite throwing for 376 yards. The Beavers' lack of a running game could make finishing drives difficult again, and Texas Tech doesn't need to turn this into a track meet to win comfortably. A game around 34-14 or 35-14 gives Texas Tech control while keeping us below the number. Take Under 51.5.
