Toledo impressive at home; can they win a road game?
The Toledo Rockets are 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play heading into Week 9, putting them squarely at 7th in the 13-team MAC standings. Two things jump out immediately when looking at the Rockets' record: they're a perfect 4-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, and they lead the conference by a wide margin in points scored at 126. The Ohio Bobcats rank second among MAC teams with 97; the Buffalo Bulls, who currently lead the MAC standings, rank third with 90.
Their 45-10 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes last week marked their game with 45 points or more–and their third game with exactly 45 points, joining their 45-21 win over Western Kentucky and their 45-3 win over Akron. Toledo outgained Kent State 552 yards to 224, gained 29 first downs while allowing only nine, and watched senior quarterback Tucker Gleason throw four touchdowns for the first time in his career. Gleason completed 21 of 28 attempts for 294 yards in the game, averaging a 75.0 completion percentage and 10.5 yards per attempt, and connected with a different receiver for each of his four touchdown throws.

Toledo ranks 48th in passing yards (255.4), 28th in rushing yards (200.7), 30th in points (35.3), and 7th in points allowed (14.3) per game among 136 FBS teams. That aside, it's still hard to ignore their jarring home-road split–they've outscored their four home opponents 195-34, but have been outscored 66-52 in three road games. They'll make their longest road trip of the season when they face the Cougars in Pullman this Saturday.
Washington State was five points away from upsetting Ole Miss, Virginia
It's hard to win games on the road against ranked teams, but that's what the Washington State Cougars nearly did in each of the past two weeks against Ole Miss and Virginia. The Cougars are returning to Pullman this Saturday for the first time since losing 59-24 to Washington in September, between their Week 6 bye and three straight road games. The first ended in a 20-3 win over Colorado State; the latter two ended in a 24-21 loss to No. 4 Ole Miss and a 22-20 loss to No. 18 Virginia. Against the spread, Washington State covered in all three games by a combined margin of 66 points.
Last week's game against Virginia, especially, got away from the Cougars in a rough fashion. Washington State led 17-7 at halftime and 20-10 at the end of the third quarter. They had possession with the game tied 20-20 in the final three minutes; the problem was they had it at their own two-yard line, because that's where Leyton Smithson chose to call for a fair catch. Two incomplete passes from quarterback Zevi Eckhaus and a false start penalty later, the Cavaliers tackled lead back Kirby Vorhees in the endzone for a game-winning safety.
Eckhaus could've had a better game–he completed 18 of 27 passes for 183 yards, averaging 6.8 per attempt, but ended two drives with interceptions. Vorhees led the backfield with 45 rushing yards but did so on 16 carries, averaging only 2.8 yards per attempt. Senior receiver Joshua Meredith carried the team through the air, hauling in Eckhaus' lone touchdown pass and seven of his completions, racking up 108 of the team's 183 air yards. No other receiver on the team had more than two catches or 20 yards.
Washington State averages 220.7 passing yards per game, good for 78th among 136 FBS teams. They're 132nd in rushing yards with an average of only 93.0–Vorhees leads the group with 289 through seven games, but he posted a season-high in yards (88) and his lone touchdown against Ole Miss two weeks ago.
Toledo vs. Washington State Pick
Spread Pick for Toledo vs. Washington State
- Washington State -1.5 (-105) (4 Units)
Progress isn't linear in college football, but it's hard to take Toledo on such a narrow spread here after looking at their road record and what Washington State has done in each of the past two weeks against far superior competition. The Rockets are 5-2 against the spread this season but 0-2 ATS in their two most recent road games. The Cougars, of course, have blown out the spread in three straight games.
Over/Under Pick for Toledo vs. Washington State
- Over 45.5 (-115) (4 Units)
The line of 45.5 is the lowest Washington State has seen this year and ties the lowest Toledo has seen. The Team Total Over is only 3-4 in Washington State games, but it's 2-1 when they've played in Pullman. Toledo allowed their season-high in points when they last went on the road, losing 28-23 to the Bowling Green Falcons. The Cougars finished each of their last three road games with just under 46 points; I wouldn't tempt fate by betting on it to happen again, at home, against an opponent they should have an easier time scoring on.
