Towson Faces Another Difficult FBS Assignment
Towson has opened the season with losses to Maine and Navy and now faces an even more difficult assignment at South Carolina. The Tigers fell 42-15 at Navy despite generating some success through the passing game.
Andrew Indorf completed 13 of 18 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Enterline caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, while Jacob Zollar hauled in a 30-yard scoring reception. Indorf has now completed at least 70 percent of his passes in each of Towson's first two games.
The problem against Navy was stopping the run. Towson surrendered an enormous 506 rushing yards, with the Midshipmen averaging 6.9 yards per carry. The Tigers themselves managed only 39 rushing yards, leaving the offense heavily dependent on Indorf.
South Carolina won't run Navy's option attack, but Towson's inability to consistently win at the line of scrimmage is still a major concern against an SEC opponent with a substantial advantage in size, speed and depth.
South Carolina Dominates Kent State
South Carolina couldn't have asked for a much stronger opener, crushing Kent State 57-0 at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks accumulated 645 total yards while completely shutting down the Golden Flashes.
LaNorris Sellers completed 19 of 23 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Donovan Murph caught two touchdown passes, while Jabree Coleman scored twice on the ground. Six different South Carolina players reached the end zone.
The Gamecocks were equally dominant defensively, recording the shutout while allowing Kent State only 179 total yards. South Carolina's offense averaged better than nine yards per pass attempt, while its defense consistently prevented Kent State from generating manageable situations.
Towson's passing game provides a slightly different challenge, but South Carolina's advantage along the line of scrimmage should be overwhelming. The biggest handicapping question is not whether the Gamecocks win, but how aggressively they continue scoring once the outcome is decided.
Towson vs South Carolina Picks and Prediction
Pick: South Carolina -31.5 or Better
With no dependable conventional sportsbook spread posted yet, South Carolina -31.5 or better is my target. Towson just allowed Navy to rush for 506 yards and now faces an SEC roster that produced 645 yards in its opener. South Carolina also held Kent State to 179 yards and no points, making it difficult to project Towson sustaining enough drives to stay inside the number. The backdoor is always a concern with an FCS opponent catching this many points, but anything below five touchdowns remains playable. Take South Carolina -31.5 or better.
Pick: Under 58.5
The Under 58.5 is my preferred total target. South Carolina could do most of the scoring, but Towson's offensive matchup is extremely difficult against a defense that just posted a shutout. If the Gamecocks establish a four- or five-touchdown advantage, the second half could become much more conservative with South Carolina shortening the game and using its depth. A result around 45-7 or 48-7 stays underneath this target. Take the Under if the total is set at 58.5 or higher.
Final Picks: South Carolina -31.5 or better and Under 58.5 or higher
