Golden Hurricane Slide To 0-3 in AAC Play
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football program ushered in a new era in 2025, bringing in head coach Tre Lamb, and things haven't worked out well for the first-time D-1 FBS-level coach. Through six games, the Golden Hurricane are 2-4 and have yet to win a game against a conference opponent. Their lone wins are against Abilene Christian (35-7) and an Oklahoma State (19-12) team that fired Mike Gundy. As for the AAC defeats, Tulsa has lost to Navy (42-23), Tulane (31-14), and Memphis (45-7), most recently. The Memphis loss was on October 4th, meaning Tulsa is coming off a bye. As for the sports betting numbers, the Golden Hurricane are 2-4 ATS and 5-1 to the under.
Baylor Hayes, a redshirt freshman transfer from East Tennessee State, has been named the starting quarterback moving forward. He has already handled a bulk of the QB work this season, throwing for 787 yards on a 61.1% completion rate, adding four touchdowns and three picks. WR Zion Booker is the top target in the passing game, hauling in 35 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown. RB Dominich Richardson has spearheaded the rushing attack, gaining 538 yards and two touchdowns on 112 carries (4.8 YPC).
- Offensively, the Golden Hurricane are scoring 15.4 points per game (123rd), while averaging 342.4 yards per week (92nd).
- Defensively, they are 96th in the country this year, conceding 30.2 points per game. They’re allowing 409.8 yards per contest, which is 92nd.
Pirates Drop Close Game To Green Wave
Like Tulsa, the East Carolina Pirates are also dealing with a coaching change, but things are looking a little brighter in Greenville for Coach Blake Harrell. ECU may be just 3-3 out of the gate, but they’ve suffered some tough losses to respectable teams like NC State (24-17), BYU (34-13), and Tulane (26-19), most recently. They’ve notched notable FBS victories over Coastal Carolina (38-0) and Army (28-6). The Pirates’ underlying success stands out when looking at the betting numbers, as they’re 4-1-1 ATS. They’ve gone 5-1 to the under, which speaks to their excellent defense.

It’s a veteran offense for the Pirates this season, which is led by redshirt junior Katin Houser. The signal caller has been slinging it this year, amassing 1,689 passing yards on a 67.6% completion rate, adding eight touchdowns and four picks. WRs Anthony Smith (406 yards, 1 TD), Yannick Smith (370 yards, 2 TD), and Brock Spalding (337 yards, 2 TD) have all contributed out wide. The rushing attack has been diversified as well, but RB London Montgomery leads the pack with 240 yards and two touchdowns on 60 carries (4.0 YPC).
- ECU’s offense has been mediocre this season, ranking 87th in scoring (23.0 PPG), while putting up 417.0 yards per game (39th).
- On the defensive side, the Pirates are 18th this season, allowing 18.0 points per game. In terms of yardage, they’re 57th, conceding 365.6 yards per contest.
Tulsa vs. East Carolina Pick
Spread Pick for Tulsa vs. ECU
- East Carolina Pirates -17.0 (-110) (5 units)
I’m laying the points with East Carolina in this game. The Pirates are 4-1-1 ATS this season, and 5-1-1 ATS dating back to last year. They have a veteran quarterback in Katin Houser (1,689 yards, 67.6% completion rate), and he’s set to shred a Tulsa defense that’s allowing 30.2 points per game (96th) against FBS-level opposition this year. The Golden Hurricane have conceded 31+ points in their last two outings against Tulane (31-14) and Memphis (45-7), losing by at least 17 points in each of those contests.
I’ll dive more into East Carolina’s defense below, but they should be primed for a monster performance as well. Let’s ride with the Pirates.
Over/Under Pick for Tulsa vs. ECU
- Under 54.5 (-1115) (5 units)
This is a pretty lofty number, and I just cannot see the final score reaching 55+ points. The only chance the over has to cash is if East Carolina drops 40+ points, which isn’t impossible, but I would say that’s really stretching the range and skewing high for them. I think a realistic score is in the 35-13 or 35-17 range, keeping us comfortably under the number.
Chiefly, I love this East Carolina defense. For starters, they’re allowing only 18.0 points per game (18th) against FBS-level opposition. But what stands out the most is their red-zone defense. The Pirates are the fifth-best red-zone defense in the nation, allowing touchdowns on only 33.3% of opposing trips inside the 20-yard line (6-for-18). Factor in that Tulsa is rolling with a redshirt freshman quarterback in a road game, and I don’t expect to see much production out of their offense. The under is 8-1 in East Carolina’s last nine games, while going 5-1 in Tulsa’s last six. Give me the under.
