Tulsa Defense Makes an Early Statement
Tulsa opened its season with an impressive 24-10 victory over Oklahoma State, controlling the game from the opening quarter and never trailing. The Golden Hurricane didn't dominate the yardage battle, finishing with 361 total yards compared to 368 for Oklahoma State, but Tulsa consistently produced the game's biggest plays.
The defense was the difference. Tulsa forced four turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, while recording two sacks. The Golden Hurricane also stopped Oklahoma State four times on fourth down and limited the Cowboys to only 10 points despite allowing 27 first downs.
Baylor Hayes completed 17 of 24 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown while adding 28 rushing yards. Damari Alston carried 15 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while Oran Singleton caught four passes for 99 yards and a score. Tulsa didn't need overwhelming offensive production because its defense continually created favorable situations.
That formula could travel well to Huntsville. Sam Houston showed it can throw the football in its opener, but Tulsa's ability to generate turnovers and prevent opponents from finishing drives gives the Golden Hurricane a major advantage.
Sam Houston Passing Game Impresses in Defeat
Sam Houston came extremely close to earning a road victory in its opener before falling 24-21 to Troy. The Bearkats actually outgained the Trojans 373-342 and finished with 22 first downs, but they couldn't overcome a critical third-quarter interception and an inability to establish the running game.
Landyn Locke had an excellent performance overall, completing 30 of 46 passes for a career-high 335 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Grady O'Neill caught seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, while Tim Burns Jr. added 63 receiving yards.
The biggest problem was the ground game. Sam Houston managed only 38 rushing yards on 24 attempts, averaging 1.6 yards per carry. Alton McCaskill accounted for 51 yards, meaning sacks and other negative plays dragged the overall rushing production even lower.
The Bearkats' defense produced eight tackles for loss and four sacks against Troy, so there are reasons to believe Sam Houston can make Tulsa work. However, becoming almost completely dependent on Locke's passing creates a difficult matchup against a Golden Hurricane defense that just forced four turnovers.
Tulsa vs Sam Houston Picks and Prediction
Pick: Tulsa -14.5
Tulsa -14.5 is my preferred side. Sam Houston's passing production makes laying more than two touchdowns uncomfortable, but the Bearkats' complete inability to establish the run is the deciding factor. Tulsa just held Oklahoma State to 10 points while forcing four turnovers, and the Golden Hurricane should be able to pressure Locke without having to commit excessive resources to stopping the run. Tulsa also demonstrated enough offensive balance to capitalize on short fields. The number is playable at 14.5, but I would become considerably less interested if it climbs through 17. Take Tulsa -14.5.
Pick: Under 51.5
The Under 51.5 is my preferred total. Tulsa's opener produced only 34 combined points, and the Golden Hurricane showed they are comfortable winning with defense, field position and a controlled offensive approach. Sam Houston generated 373 yards against Troy but scored only 21 points, while its 38 rushing yards leave the Bearkats vulnerable if Tulsa can disrupt the passing game. A result around 31-17 or 30-17 gives Tulsa room to cover while keeping the game below the number. Take Under 51.5.
Final Picks: Tulsa -14.5 and Under 51.5
