By: Kim Smith Published 09/08/2026, 12:05 PM ET

The No. 6 UC Davis Aggies travel to Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas, to face the No. 19 SMU Mustangs on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM ET with coverage on ACC Network Extra. UC Davis enters at 2-0 after winning each of its first two games on the road, while SMU is 1-0 following a dramatic road victory at Florida State on Monday night. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Check out our free college football picks throughout the season.

UC Davis Brings a Dangerous Offense to Dallas

UC Davis has already played twice this season and arrives in Dallas with a perfect 2-0 record. The Aggies opened with a remarkable 31-24 comeback victory at Portland State after trailing 21-0 at halftime. They followed that performance with a much more convincing 49-17 road victory over San Diego.

Treynor Cleeland has quickly emerged as the centerpiece of the offense. After throwing for 287 yards and two touchdowns in the comeback at Portland State, he completed 22 of 31 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns against San Diego. Samuel Gbatu Jr. caught nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the San Diego victory, while Matteo Perez supplied a major rushing threat with 123 yards on only nine carries, including a 79-yard touchdown.

UC Davis has therefore demonstrated two very different ways to win. The Aggies overcame a three-touchdown deficit in their opener and then dominated their second opponent by 32 points. They have scored 80 points through two games and will arrive at SMU having already played two road contests. This is unquestionably their toughest opponent yet, but UC Davis looks considerably more dangerous than the typical FCS team appearing on an ACC schedule.

SMU Returns Home After a Huge Road Victory

SMU couldn't have asked for a much more significant opening victory. The Mustangs went to Tallahassee on Monday night and defeated Florida State 27-24, winning on a 20-yard field goal with only 21 seconds remaining.

Kevin Jennings threw for 430 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, helping SMU overcome a pair of interceptions. The Mustangs demonstrated that they can produce explosive offense against ACC competition and handle the pressure of a close road game.

There is, however, an unusual scheduling element to consider. SMU played Florida State on Monday night and now returns to the field Saturday afternoon, giving the Mustangs a short turnaround before their home opener. UC Davis played Saturday night, so the Aggies have the more conventional week of preparation.

SMU still owns the major talent and depth advantage and should ultimately control this matchup. The question for bettors isn't whether the Mustangs deserve to be favored. It's how many points are too many against an experienced and nationally ranked FCS opponent that has already demonstrated substantial offensive ability.

UC Davis vs SMU Picks and Prediction

Pick: UC Davis +28.5 or Better

Until a conventional sportsbook line becomes available, UC Davis +28.5 or better is my target. SMU should win, but asking the Mustangs to cover more than four touchdowns against this particular FCS opponent would be aggressive. UC Davis is 2-0, has scored 80 points and has already overcome adversity in two road environments. The Aggies also catch SMU only five days after an emotional conference road victory at Florida State. An analytical projection currently makes SMU roughly a 35-point favorite, but matchup circumstances make me more interested in the underdog once we're getting four touchdowns or more. Take UC Davis if the spread is +28.5 or higher.

Pick: Over 55.5 or Lower

The offensive potential on both sides makes the Over at 55.5 or lower my preferred total target. UC Davis has scored 31 and 49 points, while its first two games produced 55 and 66 combined points. SMU just generated 27 points against Florida State behind a 430-yard passing performance, and the Mustangs should find more scoring opportunities against an FCS defense. The key is whether UC Davis can contribute enough points against the SMU defense. Given what the Aggies have demonstrated through two games, asking them for somewhere in the 17-to-24-point range is reasonable. A result such as 42-21 or 45-20 would comfortably clear this target. Take the Over if the total is set at 55.5 or lower.

Final Picks: UC Davis +28.5 or Better and Over 55.5 or Lower
