Chesney went 21-6 with the Dukes, including an undefeated Sun Belt record, conference championship and College Football Playoff appearance last season. He also brought a substantial portion of his James Madison infrastructure to Westwood, including seven coaches, 19 support staffers and 10 players. UCLA has undergone enormous roster reconstruction overall, bringing in 45 transfers, the most among Big Ten programs. That creates plenty of new pieces to integrate, but it also gives Chesney an opportunity to immediately reshape a program looking for better results.

The Bruins at least have continuity at quarterback with Nico Iamaleava returning for his second season at UCLA. He completed 64.4% of his passes last year for 1,928 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions while also leading the Bruins in rushing with 505 yards and four scores. That dual-threat ability is important in a game where one or two extended drives could determine the outcome. UCLA also added significant offensive production through the transfer portal, giving the Bruins more ways to create favorable matchups around their returning quarterback.

There are reasons to be cautious about laying points on the road with such a heavily reconstructed roster, but we're being asked to lay only 1.5. UCLA doesn't need to establish clear separation from California to cash. The Bruins simply need to win by a field goal. Chesney has also been excellent in season openers, carrying a 12-4 career record into this matchup and winning each of his last six openers by at least two scores. UCLA is hardly guaranteed to continue that trend, but the combination of an experienced quarterback and a proven new coaching staff gives the Bruins a slight edge.

California Gets Its New Era Started at Home

California is also starting over with Tosh Lupoi making his head-coaching debut in front of the home crowd. That makes Saturday night considerably more meaningful than an ordinary nonconference opener. California hasn't hosted UCLA since the two schools departed the Pac-12, and this is the first meeting between the longtime rivals since 2023. The Golden Bears have designated the matchup as their home opener and Joe Roth Memorial Game, giving California plenty of emotional incentive to begin the new era with a victory.

The Bears aren't simply starting from scratch, either. California returns quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele after an encouraging freshman season and now gives him an opportunity to take another step as the centerpiece of the offense. That quarterback continuity is important when so much else changes around a program. California should also benefit from playing this game in Berkeley, where UCLA's massive collection of transfers will immediately have to demonstrate that its offseason reconstruction can function cohesively in a rivalry environment.

The concern is whether home field is enough to overcome UCLA's slight advantages elsewhere. Oddsmakers have made California the underdog despite the Bears hosting the game, which is meaningful when we're dealing with such a small spread. California doesn't need much to flip the matchup, however. One turnover, special-teams play or late defensive stop could determine the winner. That's why I'm not interested in laying anything approaching a field goal with UCLA, but at -1.5, the Bruins only need to turn their slight overall edge into a straight-up victory.

I'm taking UCLA -1.5. With the spread this small, we're essentially being asked to choose the outright winner, and I give the Bruins the slightest advantage. UCLA has an experienced dual-threat quarterback returning and hired a coach who went 21-6 over the previous two seasons while winning a conference championship and reaching the College Football Playoff. California gets home field and has enough returning offensive talent to make this a four-quarter game, but UCLA being favored on the road tells us how closely these teams are being evaluated. Something around UCLA 27, California 24 is my working score. That gives the Bruins a field-goal victory and gets us across -1.5. Take UCLA -1.5.

Pick: Under 53.5

I'll stay with Under 53.5. Both teams are playing their first games under new coaching staffs, and UCLA in particular is integrating an enormous transfer class into its system. That doesn't automatically mean poor offense, but it creates enough potential for early-game inconsistency to make a total in the mid-50s somewhat demanding. A close rivalry game also fits naturally with both teams becoming more conservative if the score remains within one possession during the second half. My 27-24 UCLA projection produces 51 combined points, while 27-21 or 24-23 provides additional room. Take Under 53.5.
