The Huskies' first matchup against Power Four competition produced a much different result. Maryland came to East Hartford and won 38-14, exposing problems on both sides of the football.

UConn struggled to consistently run the football and couldn't maintain offensive efficiency once Maryland settled into the game. The Huskies also had problems tackling and preventing sustained drives, allowing the Terrapins to steadily build separation. The defeat didn't erase everything positive from Week 1, but it demonstrated that UConn still has plenty to prove against FBS opponents.

Saturday provides an excellent measuring stick because Southern Miss is also 1-1 and coming off a blowout loss to a Power Four opponent. UConn isn't facing Maryland's roster this week, and the Huskies should have more opportunities to establish their offense. The question is whether they deserve to be laying points on the road after such a poor performance.

Southern Miss Returns Home After Being Overwhelmed at Auburn

Southern Miss also experienced both extremes during its first two games. The Golden Eagles opened by crushing Alcorn State 49-3 and appeared to carry significant momentum into their first road game. Auburn quickly changed that picture, beating Southern Miss 43-8 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The Golden Eagles struggled to handle Auburn's physical advantages and were held to 221 total yards. They also surrendered 613 yards, including 343 on the ground. Those numbers are alarming, but UConn doesn't possess Auburn's combination of SEC size and athleticism. Southern Miss should find this matchup considerably more manageable.

Home field becomes important because both teams are trying to recover from ugly defeats. UConn must travel to Hattiesburg after losing by 24 at home, while Southern Miss gets an opportunity to regroup at M.M. Roberts Stadium. With the market giving the Golden Eagles more than a field goal, the home underdog offers some value in a matchup between two teams still searching for their true level.

Take Southern Miss +3.5. These teams have remarkably similar profiles: each dominated a weaker opening opponent and then suffered a lopsided defeat against Power Four competition. UConn is being asked to lay more than a field goal on the road immediately after losing 38-14 at home. Southern Miss should be much more competitive than it was at Auburn, and getting through the key number of three makes the Golden Eagles my preferred side.

Pick: Under 55.5

Take the Under 55.5. The huge Week 1 offensive numbers came against Louisiana and Alcorn State, while both teams struggled dramatically once the competition improved. Southern Miss scored eight at Auburn and UConn managed 14 against Maryland. A projected Southern Miss 27, UConn 24 gives the home underdog the outright victory while keeping the game below the posted total.
