UNLV fumbles away 40-35 loss to New Mexico
The UNLV Rebels started the season on a hot, if precarious, 6-0 winning streak. Their star has fallen a bit after a 56-31 loss at Boise State, a bye week, and a 40-35 loss to New Mexico. They're 6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play heading into Week 11, putting them at only 7th in the 12-team Mountain West Standings.
Anthony Colandrea did what he could against the Lobos, completing 36 of 46 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He led the team on the ground with 41 yards on eight carries, but he was party to a fumbling problem that likely cost UNLV the game. Colandrea fumbled twice, losing the ball once–on 3rd and 19 near the end of the first half, giving the Lobos possession on what became a field goal drive to end the half. The Rebels padded their fumble stats with several lateral passes on the last play of the game, but Colandrea's second-quarter fumble was the second of three that the team lost in the game–and the second to directly lead to points for New Mexico.
UNLV ranks 38th among FBS teams in passing yards per game (256.6), 26th in rushing yards (193.9), and 16th in points (36.9), but only 126th in points allowed (34.3). Their recipe for success hit a wall against Boise State and came up short against the Lobos, but it should give them a chance against a Colorado State team that's struggled to win with any recipe of their own.

Can Colorado State bounce back after a shutout loss?
The Colorado State Rams haven't done much this season, and currently find themselves in 10th place in the 12-team Mountain West standings. They're 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play, buoyed only by a 21-17 win against FCS Northern Colorado and a curious 49-21 win against Fresno State. While that win looks interesting with the Bulldogs at 6-3 after upsetting Boise State last week, the Rams have lost to Hawai'i (31-19) and Wyoming (28-0) in the two games they've played since.
Jackson Brousseau completed 10 of 18 passes in the game, ending three drives with interceptions before being supplanted by freshman quarterback Darius Curry. Brousseau originally took the starting job from Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, who was in his fourth year at Colorado State and his third as a full-time starter. Fowler-Nicolosi left the program weeks ago, following the team's firing of fourth-year head coach Jay Norvell. Tyson Summers, the team's first-year defensive coordinator, took over as the team's interim coach ahead of last week's loss to Wyoming. He went 5-13 in his previous — and only other — stint as a head coach at Georgia Southern, which ended with his firing after a 0-6 start in 2017.
Colorado State ranks T-105th in passing yards per game (187.5), 83rd in rushing yards per game (141.5), T-122nd in points per game (19.4), and 90th in points allowed per game (27.1) out of 136 FBS teams. They finished their 28-0 loss to Wyoming with 211 passing yards and 94 rushing yards, but ended each of their two drives that went over 50 yards with turnovers. Their only drive in the first half to go over 20 yards ended with an interception, giving Wyoming possession for their third touchdown drive of the game.
UNLV vs. Colorado State Pick
Spread Pick for UNLV vs. Colorado State
- UNLV -4.5 (-115) (5 Units)
It's extremely hard to look at the current state of the Rams and see a team that'll be competitive here. They're one game into the tenure of an interim coach, they spent that game losing in a shutout to a Wyoming team that's only one place ahead of them in the conference standings, and their quarterback situation is dire. UNLV has been waiting a month for an opponent as vulnerable as the Rams, and I have no reservations about taking the Rebels to get right here. A 4.5-point spread here feels conservative, but it's understandable given how narrowly UNLV won some of their earlier games. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rebels won by twice as much as they need to cover.
Over/Under Pick for UNLV vs. Colorado State
- Under 62.5 (-115) (4 Units)
The Team Total Under is 5-3 in Colorado State games and 2-0 in their past two outings–their 31-19 loss to Hawai'i and their 28-0 loss to Wyoming, both of which kicked off with lines set well below 62.5 points. UNLV has been in barnburners recently–their 40-35 loss to New Mexico is the lowest-scoring game they've played in a month–but they can't score the Rams' points for them. It's hard to picture the Rams scoring as much as they'd need to hit the total here after what they put on the field last week. I expect this to be the game where UNLV brings the temperature down and gets back in the win column by a decisive but more modest margin.
