UNLV vs Hawaii Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 5 2026
UNLV travels to Honolulu for an important early Mountain West matchup against Hawaii at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET, with The CW carrying the game nationally. Both teams enter at 0-1 after suffering Week 0 losses, with UNLV falling 27-21 to Memphis and Hawaii losing 37-27 at Stanford. UNLV is currently favored by approximately three points on the road, while the total has moved closer to 56.5 after previously sitting around 58.5. This is essentially being priced as a competitive matchup, making the points with the home underdog particularly interesting. Get into the action with our free college football picks.
UNLV Looks to Recover From Its Opening Loss
UNLV entered 2026 with substantial expectations after winning 30 games over the previous three seasons and reaching the Mountain West Championship Game in three consecutive years. The Rebels were expected to again contend near the top of the conference, but their opener didn't go according to plan. UNLV lost 27-21 at home to Memphis after carrying a 21-14 advantage into halftime. The Rebels failed to score after the break, turning what looked like a promising opening performance into an immediate 0-1 start.
The offense showed enough against Memphis to remain dangerous. UNLV generated 412 total yards, including 339 through the air, but the Rebels struggled to establish consistent balance. The running game produced only 73 yards on 30 attempts, while the offense allowed six sacks. Those protection and rushing issues become especially important on the road. UNLV cannot depend exclusively on its passing game while allowing Hawaii to consistently create long-yardage situations and pressure the quarterback.
The Rebels nevertheless have enough offensive upside to justify being favored. UNLV has also enjoyed considerable recent success in this series, including a 38-10 victory last season, and has won four of the last five meetings overall. The problem is that Honolulu has historically been a much different assignment. UNLV is only 4-13 all-time against Hawaii in the islands, and the Rainbow Warriors have won three of the last four meetings played in Honolulu. Laying a field goal therefore isn't nearly as straightforward as UNLV's recent overall series success might suggest.
Hawaii Returns Home After Showing Fight at Stanford
Hawaii also enters at 0-1 after losing 37-27 at Stanford, but the final score doesn't completely describe how competitive the Rainbow Warriors were. Hawaii fell behind 30-14 before mounting a fourth-quarter comeback and cutting the deficit to 30-27. The Rainbow Warriors had an opportunity to complete the comeback before Stanford returned a late fumble for a touchdown, producing the final 10-point margin. Hawaii lost, but it demonstrated enough offensive ability to make Saturday's home opener interesting.
The Rainbow Warriors generated 421 total yards against Stanford and showed the ability to create offense through the passing game. Hawaii finished with 306 passing yards while averaging 6.4 yards per play overall. The concern was a defense that allowed Stanford to produce 453 total yards and 37 points. Hawaii cannot afford another game in which its offense is repeatedly asked to erase double-digit deficits, particularly against a UNLV team capable of attacking through the air.
Home field is the strongest argument for the Rainbow Warriors. Hawaii is 13-4 all-time against UNLV in Honolulu, and this will be the Rainbow Warriors' 2026 home opener. The school is promoting a white-out atmosphere for what has become known as the Ninth Island Showdown, adding some additional energy to an already important conference opener. With both teams trying to avoid an 0-2 start and UNLV laying approximately a field goal, getting the home underdog at +3 becomes attractive.
UNLV vs Hawaii Picks and Prediction
Pick: Hawaii +3
I'm taking Hawaii +3, and +3.5 would obviously be even better if it becomes available. UNLV may ultimately prove to be the stronger team and has dominated the recent overall series, but the Rebels showed legitimate problems protecting the quarterback and running the football against Memphis. Hawaii demonstrated enough offensive ability at Stanford to believe it can keep this competitive, and the Rainbow Warriors have historically performed extremely well against UNLV in Honolulu. With both teams coming off competitive Week 0 losses, I don't see enough separation to comfortably lay a field goal on the road. Something around Hawaii 30, UNLV 28 is my working score. Take Hawaii +3.
Pick: Over 56.5
I'm staying with the Over, but using the updated 56.5 number rather than the earlier 58.5. Both offenses showed enough during Week 0 to create scoring opportunities, with Hawaii generating 421 yards against Stanford and UNLV producing 412 against Memphis. The defensive performances were less convincing, particularly with Hawaii surrendering 453 yards and UNLV struggling to generate consistent second-half stops. We also don't need an extreme shootout at this number. A 30-28 result produces 58 points, while 31-28 or 31-27 also gets us across the current total. Take Over 56.5.
Final Picks: Hawaii +3 and Over 56.5
