Long-distance Big Ten travel has become an important situational consideration, particularly when a West Coast team plays an early-afternoon game in the Eastern time zone. USC needs to avoid a sluggish opening that gives Rutgers confidence.

USC is 3-0 and has consistently demonstrated considerably more offensive upside, while Rutgers has already lost home to UMass and on the road to Boston College. Once USC adjusts to the travel and environment, its offensive advantages should create separation.

Pick: Over 55.5

Take the Over if the total is set at 55.5 or lower. USC just scored 49 against Louisiana but also surrendered 30, creating a very different total profile from some of the defensive favorites on Saturday's schedule. Rutgers should find enough offense at home to contribute, especially if USC's travel produces some early defensive inconsistency. A projected USC 38, Rutgers 21 gives the Trojans the cover and narrowly clears the target.
