Utah St. vs Utah Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026
The Utah State Aggies make the short trip to Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, to face the No. 17 Utah Utes on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET in another edition of the Battle of the Brothers. Utah enters at 2-0 and climbed three spots in the AP poll after destroying Arkansas 43-10, while Utah State gets an opportunity to test itself against one of the strongest teams on its schedule. The rivalry also carries an unusual storyline this season, with several familiar Utah State connections now on the Utah sideline. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Utah State Gets a Major In-State Measuring Stick
Utah State enters this rivalry game facing considerably more than an ordinary road assignment. The Aggies travel only about 90 minutes south to Salt Lake City, but the difference in competition is substantial. Utah has already established itself as a nationally ranked team, meaning Utah State needs its most complete performance of the young season simply to keep this game competitive into the second half.
The rivalry element should help Utah State's intensity. Several connections between the programs add another layer to the matchup, and the Aggies should have no difficulty treating this as one of the most important games on their nonconference schedule. Emotion alone won't be enough, however. Utah State must avoid turnovers and prevent Utah from generating the explosive plays that buried Arkansas before halftime.
The Aggies' best strategy is to shorten the game. Sustained possessions would keep Utah's offense on the sideline and reduce the number of opportunities the Utes have to exploit their advantages in depth and physicality. If Utah State starts giving Utah short fields or repeatedly goes three-and-out, the same type of separation that occurred against Arkansas could happen quickly.
Utah Looks Like a Legitimate Big 12 Contender
Utah's 43-10 victory over Arkansas was one of the more impressive performances of Week 2. The Utes didn't simply defeat an SEC opponent at Rice-Eccles Stadium; they effectively ended the competitive portion of the game before halftime. Utah led 29-3 at the break and finished with 443 yards of offense while its defense prevented Arkansas from establishing any consistent rhythm.
That performance moved Utah from No. 20 to No. 17 in the latest AP poll and reinforced the belief that the Utes can contend for the Big 12 championship. Utah is now 2-0 at home and has demonstrated an ability to win through both offensive explosiveness and defensive control. The balance makes the Utes particularly difficult to handicap against an underdog because there isn't an obvious weakness Utah State can simply attack.
The biggest concern is avoiding an emotional drop after such a dominant win. Arkansas represented a high-profile SEC opponent, while Utah State arrives as a significant underdog. The rivalry should help prevent Utah from overlooking the Aggies, however, and the Utes get another game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. If Utah approaches this matchup with the same physical intensity it showed against Arkansas, the margin should steadily increase.
Utah St. vs Utah Picks and Prediction
Pick: Utah -21 or Better
Take Utah if the spread is -21 or better. The Utes just demonstrated how effectively they can overwhelm an opponent at Rice-Eccles Stadium, building a 29-3 halftime lead against Arkansas before winning 43-10. Utah State should bring plenty of emotion into the rivalry, but the Utes own major advantages in depth and overall roster strength. Three touchdowns is my preferred cutoff because significantly larger numbers introduce unnecessary late-game risk.
Pick: Under 55.5
Take the Under if the total is set at 55.5 or higher. Utah's defense is the foundation of this play. The Utes just held Arkansas to 10 points and should be capable of controlling an Utah State offense stepping up substantially in competition. Utah can cover without turning this into a shootout. A projected Utah 38, Utah State 13 produces a comfortable Utes victory while remaining below the target.
Final Picks: Utah -21 or Better and Under 55.5
